Is it necessary to rent a car for a Disney trip?

I'm about to book Sheraton Vistana Villages for our Anniversary in September. We already have Magic Your Way tickets with the Park Hopper and Water Park Options from a previous cancelled trip. I'm also buying tickets to Sea World when I book the package. Do you think we'll need a rental car? DH says yes but he also thinks money grows on trees.Chat Icon I figured I'd come to the Disney experts to tell me if it's better to have the car or if it's a waste of money. TIA!

I find it convenient when I stay on Disney property, it would be a necessity if I stayed off property. Without one you are going to be a slave to the hotel shuttle bus schedule which may not be convenient. If you end up taking a couple of taxis plus the cost of getting to and from the resort - you may be right around the cost for a car rental.

Mouse Savers has lots of coupon codes for various car rental companies in Orlando.

Thanks! Yeah, we're off the property and DH had a point that I won't be able to do Disney everyday cause I have a really bad back. So at least with a car we can do different things. Thanks again!

We loved having a car when we went in June. It gives you a lot of freedom. Plus after an exhausting day of the parks, the last thing I wanted to do was to wait for a shuttle.

you can play the "Alamo Game" too. Alamo will let you reserve a car @ whatever the specific price is for that day. You just need your email address (no CC required) then you check daily and if the rate goes down, reserve a 2nd car at the new rate, and cancel the 1st reservation.

I know it sounds like a pain, but when I went 2 years ago I saved about $100 for the week rental.

HTH ! !

We did both times we went to Disney.

We left in the AM for breakfast some mornigs and it was just easier.

We used the shuttles to get to the parks and such though.

I would say if you were on property no you don't need a car -helpful yes but definitely not a necessity since the buses are pretty reliable -although crowded. But off property - the shuttles are not the disney bus system and I have read online and in the guide books they can be inefficient and problematic at best.

I would go to mousesavers.com and use those codes and if it is just you and your DH rent the smallest cheapest car you can get.

The Vistana Villages are a bit of a drive (not too far but, not right outside the property) so I would definitely get a car. We own a timeshare there - it's really nice (although we didn't stay there - we stayed at the Vistana Resort and they didn't have shuttles too often to/from Disney at the time we were there).

For rentals in Orlando, I've found good deals through Dollar (and they are on site as opposed to Enterprise).

Another option - if you are a member of BJs or Costco - is to book through them. I always find great rates through Alamo.

We've stayed at the Vistana and we rented the car. You definitely need it - Vistana is maybe 5 minutes from Disney. We liked the freedom to go to Sea World and Kennedy Space Ceneter as well without always having to go to Disney because of the shuttle buses.
