Reading Question help
I just started tutoring a little girl who is going into 2nd grade. She is below the benchmark in reading. Our school uses the DRA as a scale and the benchmark was a 16 and she was a level 12. Well anyway I worked with her twice so far and she has great comprehension, but when she reads she changes alot of the works, she's just looking at the beginning of the word and says a word with the same beginning sound. For example: trick, she'll say thing. take, she'll say tell, best she'll say bet. But even though she is making these mistakes she is still comprehending what she is reading. And lots of times the words she makes up make sense in the story. So my question is what can I do with her to help?
I have been having her use the picture,
find smaller words, or chunks in a word she doesn't know.
Go back and re-read to see if it makes sense, etc,.
But what else can I do??? Thanks!

sounds like she needs help with blends and digraphs.
i would break words up into word families.
i.e. best, test, nest, etc.
let her focus on the blends (bl, st, or other ones that may come up.,
you can do this with lists, cards (you could play a mtaching game with them, etc.)

Yeah, I was thinking of stopping at my school before tutoring her tomorrow and getting a white board and my magnetic letters so we can make words. Anymore advise??

Don't forget to instruct her to read through the entire word...she may be comprehending, but she may be rushing (is she fluent? maybe her teacher pressed fluency?)

no, she a pretty slow reader, but she does spend time looking at the pictures as she is reading.

sounds like her fluency is poor as well as comprehension as she is using the pictures as a BIG clue to aid in reading. not that that's a bad strategy, but she needs to start gleaning the comprehension from the text only.

Sounds like you're doing lots of good things! Just a few other suggestions:
1. When she makes a mistake, let her complete the sentence and then ask her to go back and find the mistake she made. That can help build her awareness.
2. Have her *slide* her finger under each word as she reads. Not just point, but slide it, so she sees each word part as she reads it.
3. Do some word work with identifying and generating middle and ending sounds in words.

IMO, if the pictures are there, she should use them. That's why they're there.  The pictures will shrink and eventually disappear as her reading progresses.
