NYC teachers
Do you go back at all before the mandated day to start setting up your room? I always have in the past but heading into my 7th year at this school and having 2 babies at home I really don't want to. I feel like we are going to be back so soon and don't want to waste a day doing school stuff. Am I being stupid?

Re: NYC teachers
Everyone has to do what's best for them. I used to go back before we had to be there to set my room up. But the longer I'm in the system, the more I am against it (for myself, not anyone else, especially new teachers who really do need all the time they can get).
I think the more we show we're willing to work for free, the more the city is going to take from us. Unless my principal is willing to give me per session, I'm not taking the time away from my daughter.

No I will not be going back earlier. With a baby at home it is going to be hard enought to find someone to watch her that Thursday and Friday since she doesn't start daycare until Sept 2nd.

I agree wholeheartedly-- and I don't have kids yet!

Re: NYC teachers
I will probably go in once before the first day just to get a jump start. But it's really just for my own personal satisfaction because I get stressed knowing I have so much to do in a short time. But in reality I know it would all get done and be just fine if I didn't go in. I think going in for a few hours on my own time is not a big deal if it helps ME. But otherwise I could totally see not wanting to give up any minute of those last few prescious days! Especially if you're spending that time with your own children.

Re: NYC teachers
hell no!
im not a classroom teacher, but i cant imagine what is So important that it has to cut everyones vacation by 3 extra days!
on top of that, we already work so many more days than the teachers on the island... unless youre a new teacher trying to make a good impression, Stay on the beach until you absolutely have to go back :)

I was told to come in on Thursday and Friday and I would have time to set up my room then.

Re: NYC teachers
in my school a lot of those first 2 days back is meetings and paperwork. we only get a couple hours each day to work on our rooms. a lot of people end up staying late those 2 days. also our rooms are usually a mess because the cleaning crews just put the furniture back anywhere and we are responsible for setting it up the way we want it. last year i went in a day early and spent most of the time moving furniture. sounds crazy i know but you gotta love nycboe!
anyway, just wanted to explain my insane neuroticism about going in early a little better

I couldn't agree more. We have workshop after workshop on that Thurs. and Fri. so nothing gets done in my room.

Re: NYC teachers
My principal is having us come in the entire week of the 18th (paid per session) to get stuff done.

It's great that you're getting paid- my principal would pay us, but I don't know if he's got the money.
