Passport for Canada
Do you need a passport to drive to Canada? We are planning on going to Niagara falls in October with my parents and my dad doesn't have one. I heard you need one if you fly, but not if you drive. Is this true?

Re: Passport for Canada
ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizens traveling to Canada are required to show U.S. Government-issued photo ID and proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
In addition, U.S. law requires that Americans entering the U.S. from Canada by air (including those returning by air from short trips to Canada ) must have a valid passport. This requirement will be extended to sea travel (except closed loop cruises), including ferry service, and land travel by the Summer of 2008. Until then, travelers entering the U.S. from Canada by sea and land must have government-issued photo identification and a document showing their U.S. citizenship (for example, a birth certificate or certificate of nationalization). Further information on upcoming changes to U.S. passport policy can be found on the Bureau of Consular Affairs web site at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html . We strongly encourage all American citizen travelers to apply for a U.S. passport well in advance of anticipated travel. American citizens can visit http://travel.state.gov or call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) for information on how to apply for their passports.
The U.S. Department of State recommends traveling with a valid U.S. passport to avoid delays or misunderstandings. A lost or stolen passport is also easier to replace when outside of the United States than other evidence of citizenship

Re: Passport for Canada
We just came back from Niagara Falls and we needed to show either a passport or a license/ and birth certificate. I was in a car with 8 people and my brothers brought their birth certificate and it was fine.

Re: Passport for Canada
I think my dad will just get the passport, it might just be easier and a passport can be really useful.

Re: Passport for Canada
if you are DRIVING - no passport is required.
Dave & I go every year. You only need a license. Next year, these rules are scheduled to change.

Re: Passport for Canada
I just went on a cruise to Canada this july. I only needed my liscense and birth certificate.
I looked into getting my passport renewed but it was expired for too long and I woud have had to start the whole process all over and I would have never gotten my passport in time. I also couldn't find my birth cer. I went online and ordered it quick thrugh a service. It told me it would take 7-10 days to get it, I had it in 3.
I'm not sure if your dad will be able to get a passport intime. I'd go the birth certificate roue for now and then continue when you guys get back to get his passport for future travels since everyone is becoming so strict. GL

I heard passports are only taking about 1-3 weeks. I guess I will find out, I just renewed my passport, so I will see how long it takes. I hope I have it by October, I need it to go to the US by then. lol.

On another note, what hotel did you all stay at? We booked Sheraton on the Falls.
