i heard that too.
im trying to plan a europe trip for the fall.
i was first set on madrid. done. then i heard mixed reviews.
then i was set on lisbon. ...but after seeing a recent show on budapest, im really considering there instead.
each place i acn do air and 4 nights hotel for $1000pp so now its just a matter of where..
keep the thought coming ladies! thanks!

Loved it!! Went a few years ago. GORGEOUS city. Alot like Prague. Very inexpensive. Sitting by the water sipping a beer is HEAVENLY!
ETA: I dont know if Id stay more than a few days there. I get bored easily in Europe and hop around alot. I spent about 48 hours in Budapest and saw all I needed to see.
Surprisingly good food there!

Any recommendations on where to stay?

I was in Budapest- just for a day though as I was on a tour with my Choir from college and we had set concerts so no choice in amount of time to stay. I loved it though. A very charming and beautiful city.
Also fairly close to Budapest was Vienna which was great and Salzburg was AMAZING! i would recommend both if you're going out that way. Salzburg is gorgeous and the Austrians are just wonderful people...so warm and friendly.

When we did Budapest, we also did Krakow and Prague. We flew into Prague, took the overnight train to Krakow and then the overnight train to Budapest where we flew out of. It was the PERFECT combination of cities and the PERFECT introduction to "Non-Western Europe"
We stayed at the Kempinski in Budapest. Gorgeous and perfect location. Tons of restaurants in walking distance.
Let me know if you guys need any more help, DH studied a semester in Budapest and knows it pretty well.

I was there briefly a few years ago...it reminds me of Prague, the architecture is very similar. Food is great, but very heavy (similar to German and all the other European countries)...beer and wine are delicious (most home-made by the reastaurant)...I think 4 days will do there.

Went to Budapest in 2002 and loved it. 2 Days is plenty of time. We did a bus tour and a boat tour. Good food and beer as others have said. We combined it with a trip to Prague, another great city.

I went in April 2004. I loved it! Although I did spend a lot of time drinking so I forget bits and pieces of it. It totally reminded me of Prague. We went to the Terror Museum, which was in the old secret police headquarters and had the history of torture done by the Nazis and the communist secret police. We also went to Communist Statue Park which was really cool. It is like a graveyard of all the old communist statues. I am really interested in WWII history and the after effects regarding communism; not sure if this is your cup of tea.
We did a lot of walking, b/c we couldn't figure out the buses, but the trains were relatively easy, and old communist trains at that! We walked along streets in the Old City I think, sorry I forget exactly where. We had a Hungarian speaker with us (DHs friend was studying Hungarian at the time), but I do remember English wasn't used as widely there. Hungarian is similar to Finnish so it is probably nothing you have seen before.
One of the main reasons we were there is to see a DJ (James Holden). He played at the castle on top of the hill (the Citadel I think). If you get a chance and like clubs and stuff party in Hungary. Those Eastern Europeans can really party and are so friendly. We were able to communicate with people by using German, that is pretty popular there.
The coke (coca-cola) tastes better there and we had a running joke whenever we were hungry. I'm hungry in Hungary. lol...
ETA: The bathhouse is definitely worth going to even it is cold out those baths are so warm!
