How much do you spend each year

on Vacations? (the total sum of all your vacations- including long weekends, etc)...

How do you break it up?

Do you usually decide on a set amount of $$ per year and then break it up, or just decide where you want to go and spend whatever it costs to go there?

it depends on the year... this year we took a big trip to hawaii so we spent at least 6 K on that... but the passed few years we've just gone to my parents beach house in the outer banks in NC so all we really paid for was food...

i think its that we decide we want to go and we pay whatever it takes to get there... within reason. if it seems like it might be too expensive, we'll look at options like cheaper hotels ( we both grew up camping, so we're not hotel snobs- LOL) or if we can use points or stay with a friend or whatever...

I said under $1,000 because we don't take vacations every year.
We just went on a cruise and the total cost, with spending money was:

$5,000

The airfare to visit my family is what kills us.

We spend a lot. Travelling is one of our favorite things to do and we take 2 big trips a year - usually to Europe. While we do try to travel on the off-season and always are looking for good deals, we still spend a decent amount.

We do not set a budget for the year or trip - it's more that we just decide where we want to go. I've never added it up, but I am guessing that we spend about $7000-$8000 a year on travel.

This year, not much so far! The past few years though we definately maxed out on vacations. I would love to be able to afford to do that every year, but with the baby on the way I'm afraid things are changing for awhile!!

We are somewhere in the middle of that range.

What irritates me is we spend that much per year just to see the same things each time.. to go back and visit family since we are the ones who live OOS from them.

We are trying to talk them into meeting us at different destinations so that we can at least spend our money and vacation time on something new.

It's hard to say - we decide where to go and spend whatever it costs to get there. But the vast majority of our vacations are backpacking trips, so there's not a lot of expense other than the airfare.

We spend about 10% of our gross income on vacations a year, so we are well above your $$ range. We take 4-6 major trips a year.

BUT, traveling is our passion. We own only one car and wear clothes until we have holes in them

We dont really set a budget or divide it up any which way. Usually, when we go abroad (asia, europe, etc.) we splurge. When we go to the carib, we go average (a nicer resort in DR) and when we go to somewhere like Vegas we slum it.. staying at a super cheap place on the strip..
