Wedding anniversary thoughts

I lost my mom to lung cancer back in November. Chat Icon

Anyways my dad's wedding anniversary is coming up in two weeks. I am trying to figure out how I should handle this.

My sister is asking me what we should do. I don't think it's appropraite to ask him "what would you like to do on your wedding anniversary".

Their anniversary falls on a Sunday. I was thinking more along the lines of just asking him (say a week before)... "if there is anything you would like to do on Sunday".

Its obvious he will know what day it is, and I think just asking him if he wants to do anything that day should let him know that we are thinking about him and realize what day it is (without actually mentioning the day).

What do you think? I am a little torn on this as this is obviously new to me. Chat Icon

Thanks in advance.

Re: Wedding anniversary thoughts

I think your idea of asking him what he wants to do on that day is perfect.
He may want to spend time with you or maybe he might need to have the day to himself. Let him choose.

Truly, Sorry about your Mother.

Re: Wedding anniversary thoughts

Ask him if there is anything he would like to do...and go from there. Maybe he'll want to go to dinner with the family or he may just want to be alone. Either way, don't push the issue...this is going to be a hard day for all of you...Chat Icon

I am very sorry for your loss.

We lost my dad a few years ago - it was a sudden and unexpected death.

Their anniversary is coming up - Sept. 12. Mom usually likes to be by herself that day. I call and check in on her, and in the past I have offered to go out, get her mind off things. Sometimes she takes me up on it, sometimes she doesn't. Don't push - if Dad wants to stay home alone, let him. I have made the mistake of trying to bully mom into doing things, going out, etc. I had to learn to really listen to her moods.

Good luck - and believe me when I say it does get better with time.

my dad passed just over 5 years ago and it was so hard to watch my mom alone on their anniversary - the fact that he was buried on their 31st wedding anniversary makes it even harder.

My parents loved animals and zoos so we went out to the Aquarium in Riverhead on the first anniversary that my mom had after my dad passed.

Every year, I send her flowers and take her to dinner, let her know that she is loved from above and here on earth...

Just spend time with him, do the things he enjoys - help him smile and laugh and remind him that she is always there.
