If you could do it all over again
would you choose to teach, knowing what you already know? Why or why not?
Thanks!

Re: If you could do it all over again
In a heartbeat. It is the best choice I ever made!
It is a rewarding career that keeps me challenged, allows me to be creative while sharing a subject area I love. I love that I make a difference to teenagers.

Re: If you could do it all over again
I would do it all over mostly the same. Even getting my first masters that I never used and teaching my first certification. They definitely made me who I am today.
What I may have done differently - is stayed in the city at least for a little longer.

Re: If you could do it all over again
Yup -even though it is so demanding and frustrating sometimes. When I was in my early 20's and trying to figure out what I wanted to be, I asked all my parents friends what they would be if they were starting out again, and so many said teacher that I started seriously considering it!

You said it best, as always.
I 100% agree. It's the best decision I ever made. I worked in publishing for a year and a half. I thought I wanted to be a journalist. But I became an English teacher, a newspaper advisor, and I couldn't imagine ANYTHING being more fulfilling and wonderful.

Absolutely! I was a paralegal for a while beforehand. While I liked it, I don't regret becoming a teacher at all. Teaching is great and is also an ideal career for having a family!

YES! I wish this had been what I did my original degree in.
It's a rewarding profession that is stable.

Re: If you could do it all over again
Thanks ladies! I applied for the NYC Teaching Fellows and will hear back by October...I'm currently in a corporate legal field and I've basically hit the glass ceiling...either I go to Law School or stay in the same position for the rest of my life OR change carreers...I majored in education freshman year and then switched over to legal...even though I made that change, I've always thought about "what if" and where I would be if I pursued the teaching route.
I am very comfortable where I am and I'll be honest, I'm scared to venture out into the unknown, especially having to take a large paycut. BUT I know my professional life would be so much more fulfilling, I would be making a difference and most importantly, I'd be able to spend more time with my son and my family. I think I have nothing to lose by taking the chance and venturing out since I can always come back to this field and I feel if I don't take the chance I'd regret it later...
Anyway, thanks for reading if you've made it this far...

ITA...for the same reasons!! And not to mention I absolutely love it. I was amazed I could find something else to be passionate about that was actually a stable career.

you sound EXACTLY like my DH exactly at this point last year. He busted his a ss in law school, work in law for awhile and HATED it.... he hated being the one locking up the kids and wanted to do more to make a difference.
he applied to Fellows and was accepted into their Mid-year progrma. he started in october of last year and is going into his second year of the program and teaching. he is so looking forward to starting tomorrow!
it's a great program, can be really hard sometimes balancing school and the job and all the stress of the first year, but he loves it.
i hope you get it! GOOD LUCK!

I do like teaching and i def like the lifestyle it provides. Ill never be rich but the time off etc is wonderful.
However, i hate being on such a schedule all day, every day. I dont love always having to be "on"

Re: If you could do it all over again
Yes, I would go into teaching again. However, I'd get additional certifications to what I have now to expand my options. I looked into speech pathology and it was just too much time and money for me to go back and take all the undergraduate and graduate credits I'd need.

Re: If you could do it all over again
nope. I would go straight into guidance counseling. Same pay, benefits vacation, and interaction with the students without having to worry about being "live on stage" every single day.
