Petco trip

Has anyone ever gone on a field trip to Petco?


It looks cute, but all I keep thinking about is the experience I have when I walk in there.


I hope someone who is knowledgeable works with the kids.


Any other cute kindergarten. first grade trips?

I even heard you can go to Califonia Pizza Kitchen.

I am sick of the same old trips.

i wouldn't even consider it with kids' allergies to pets.

even if the parents all signed consent forms, i wouldn't chance it

how is california pizza kitchen educational? i've never seen a district that allows non-educational field trips.

go see a play and do an author study with the book. go to a museum. your local police station, fire house, etc

I agree I wouldn't risk a trip to Petco.

When I was student teaching my 1st grade class went on a trip to Petco. This was at the one in Howard Beach. It was informative to a certain degree and of course at age 6 the kids found it fascinating, however for us teachers its was rather. Its also not a very long trip maybe an hour long plus commuting time.

I also wouldnt stress about kids allergies because the same thing can happen if you go to the zoo...if a kids allergic then they will have to sit out and not touch anything or stay in school/home that day.

Also they only do it like once a week on wednesdays and space and time is limited so i would book early if you decide to go.

Is there a pizzeria uno near you? They have a cute little program where the kids can even make their own pizzas.

The Queens Farm (I believe) is doing apple pressing and the kids get to take home their own cider. My friend who teaches first grade is having the kids make apple print t-shirts before they go to wear to the trip. Our school is doing Core Knowledge and during their unit on China they went to a Chinese place and learned about the food and culture from the owner.You can also call local shops, firehouses and pizza places/bakeries to see if you can come to visit. A lot of places love the visit and food is always fun!

as you get more experience (this is a general you) you will learn that a good teacher ALWAYS stresses about what COULD be a problem. allergies are a huge problem with kids and pet allergies (cat, dog) are serious. you absolutely CANNOT tell a child to stay in school or home that day---talk about a serious problem waiting to happen! EVERY child should have the privilege of going on a trip (unless there is a discipline problem) and because they have an allergy is no reason for them to not be allowed to go. that is essentially a punishment.

you will make enemies with parents and administration if you alienate kids for things that are not their fault.

Honestly if its a child with a severe allergy Im sure the parent would agree to make other arrangements and be understanding considering they wouldnt want to put there child at risk.

I actually went to the zoo with a student (5th grade) who didnt tell us hes allergic to certain kinds of animals rather kept it hush but the other students in the class tattled on him because he had a bad allergic reaction the year before when they went. Both me and the cooperating teacher kinda freaked out (i was student teaching at the time) and we basically told him not to touch anything and if he felt sick to let us know immediately...of course we both kept a good eye on him and such. However while as good teacher, I do always expect the unexpected if something is known beforehand there can always be accomodations made for that student so they dont feel excluded I'm all for it, but as we know thats not always the case. Of course this is all hypothetical and JMO on the issue.

you could face serious problems if this were to happen in my district. if that kid had an allergy attack and wound up in the hospital...i don't even want to think about what could happen to my career. i obviously cannot speak for all, but i would never ever take a chance like that in my district.

i would never plan a trip where a student knowingly couldn't go on it due to an allergy or disability. that is wrong on so many levels. they WILL feel excluded if they can't go or can't do all the things the rest of the class can do. if something was acknowledged by the parent after the trip was all planned and paid for that may be a different story, but i would never plan a trip where i KNEW someone couldn't go.

maybe it's just me, but i've been doing this a long time and i don't know any teachers in my building or district who would knowingly do this to a student.
