speech therapists HELP!!!
so.. i've been a school SLP for about 4 years now. BUT i'm starting at a new school this year. this school has self contained classrooms for special ed, which my last district did not ( at least the 2 schools that i was in). WELL since every kid in the self contained classrooms gets speech 2 times a week, apparently the last therapist used to go into the classroom and do a "speech group" one time a week. this cut down on the amount of times the kids were being pulled out. now, theres only like 7 kids in the class, but its making me SOOO nervous! i've never done a "lesson" with more than like 3 kids!! has anybody done this before? any ideas for lessons???

Do they have specific goals? Its been a while but I use to make up games like Jeopardy to target "wh" questions as well as vocabulary, categories, functional ect.. also worked on listening skills you can record a short paragraphs from a story then i used felt pictures and had the kids answer questions about the story, sequence the story ect...

i am a self-contained teacher and i often work collaboratively with the SLP. she often pushes into my classroom for her "speech time" and we co-teach. what you depends on their goals and the teacher's curriculum.
I would ask those teachers for an outline of their reading and writing curriculum and a basic time frame of when those things are being covered. i give this to my speech therapist, so for example, when i am working on say persuasive writing, she is doing language vocabulary and activities on the same topic to reinforce what i do. Also, i often use the speech-therapist to help me break down content area vocabulary. we work together on social studies vocab. for example.

dont panic :)
3 kids, 7 kids, its all the same-just kidding... first check their IEPs and make sure of their group size. they might all say 'group of 8" or "group of 3"... you dont want to get yourself in trouble
i work closely with my teachers, and always try and get the days lesson ahead of time; ie, what subject does she need me in there for? could i introduce the vocabulary to the kids in a way that theyd all understand?
what grade are these kids? you could always take one of their books from the classroom library, and make units out of each book: Ie, with "Pinky and Rex and The Perfect Pumpkin": first, do a lesson on vocabulary words, and seasons etc, then read one chapter per session. classwork could be re-hashing the chapter, discussing who the characters are, what they are doing, how they are feeling about things etc, then you could send home a similar worksheet for homework. or, have them write a sentence for each vocabulary word theyve learned. the next session, review the first chapter, read the next, and then re-hash it. homework the next day could be for you to write 5 events that occurred in the chapter, and they have to number them in the correct order...next time for homework, make up a crossword puzzle where they have to read clues (Ie, This character was very upset because her jack-o-lantern got stepped on; or "this is what we put in a jack-o-lantern to make it glow in the dark")
something thats broad enough for everyone, but that can still tap into their goals
