Medical Help

I know this should be on health, but there is not that much traffic on there and I would really like some answers to these questions. If anyone has gone through this or knows any thing about this, I would appreciate a response. TIA Thank you so much.

I have a friend that has been on BC for 9 yrs. She came off this past April. Her last period was also in April. She has not gotten a period since April.

She wants to know, is this normal?

Is it healthy not be getting a period? Should she be concerned? Or does it just take time for her period to start up again?

Does she still ovulate during these months that she is not getting her period? Can she get pregnant even though she is not getting her period?

She has been taking pregnancy test to make sure she is not pregnant, and they come back negative.

Re: Medical Help

Has she talked to her dr/OB?

This is the only person who would really be able to answer.

It could her medical history, her BC pill.

It could be so many things.

She really should look for medical advice from a professional.

Re: Medical Help

No it's not normal, she should make an appointment and see her Dr.

BCP can mask problems like PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) which does not allow you to ovulate on your own, or can make your cycles extreamly irregular. Making it very difficult to get pregnant. This happened to me after coming off BCPs. I never had any issues before BCP though.

Yes, she has. Her Dr. was very quick with her so she did not get her questions answered so she is going to a different office to see if she can get help there. But we/she was wondering if anyone has ever gone through something like this, or knows anyone.

I know someone who had similar issues. She had a tumor in her pituitary gland.

Re: Medical Help

It happened to me. I didn't get my period for months after stopping BCP. I finally went to my OB after a few months and he did some blood work. Everything hormone wise came back normal, so he gave me a Rx for Provera to jump start my period (which it did). After another few months where I didn't get it again, I went back in to my OB and same thing.... Took Provera, got my period, waited to see what was happening. When I didn't get it again, I went back to my OB for a third time (this was over a total of 8 months).

3rd time, I couldn't believe it when my PG test came back positive Chat Icon I had noooo idea... Luckily, my doc did PG tests before giving me Provera each time.

Have no idea why, but my system needed a push with the provera and I finally ovulated and got pregnant with out even knowing.

Most likely, if she is not having periods, she is having anovulatory cycles (not ovulating). If you do ovulate, you will get a period or get pregnant. So she can O at any time and get pregnant even if she thinks it won't happen (like me).

Is the Provera a hormone? i think I've heard of that....you are supposed to take it one month at a time?

I am just worried about taking any Rx. I finally stopped taking BC after all those years and the last thing I want to do is start ingesting hormones again.

I also am worried about getting pregnant as you did. Not that it would be the worst thing in the world, but I like to plan and be prepared.

Re: Medical Help

If you are planning on getting pregnant down the road, go to the dr. now to figure out what's going on. Don't wait. I posted above that I came off BCP and after many months was diagnosed with PCOS (never had a problem before going on BCP with my cycles). I'm currently pregnant now, but it took 2 years for me to get pregnant (turns out we had some other issues aside from my PCOS). But not having your period at all for the past 4 months should be cause for some concern. If you are not getting any answers from your dr. I strongly suggest finding a new one.

Yes, I agree. I currently have an appointment with a new doctor Oct 3.

Now its just a waiting game...fun!

I just want to know what is going on with my system and know if I can become pregnant or not so that I can take the appropriate measures either way.

Friggin doctors are so annoying. Couldn't get any answers to my questions other than, let's get you on clomid to start you ovulating and conceiving.

Re: Medical Help

ITA with MrsRbk. I came off BCP and had one period about 35 days after stopping. Then I never got another one.

I was diagnosed with PCOS. I'm glad I decided to start seeing someone about TTC very early, because I was totally blindsided by this.

Once treated, it's a very manageable condition. Chat Icon
