Re: Ive had a stiff neck for 2 weeks

If it's stress related (or you think it might be)....try ice. Keep the ice on for 20 minutes, then take it off for 20. Repeat it 3 times --or over the course of 2 hours. The ice actually reduces the swelling in the muscles around your neck which could be spasming from the stress. Ice always works for me!

Yes, except you need to double the time when it is off.

It's 20 minutes on MAX. Then 40 minutes off.

If you do 15 minutes on, it's 30 minutes off.

I'm sure that'll work too....just letting her know what I do. I have three complete herniations in C5, 6,and 7 and have become a bit of a pro at this. That's also what I've advised patients and friends of mine to do and they haven't had any issues. I say...whatever you're comfortable with. Chat Icon

I agree too and did you try to see a chiropractor? They can probably try to unstiffen your neck with an adjustment and massage. That usually works for me and I have a herniated disc in my neck. Feel better soon. Chat Icon

Re: Ive had a stiff neck for 2 weeks

I had that, on my left side, extending into my shoulder and left arm.

It took over a month for it to get better. Chat Icon

I tried a host of things - sleeping on my unaffected side with a heating pad on it (turned off after an hour), prescription muscle relaxers, prescription anti inflammatories, Aleve, hot compresses, cold compresses.

The saving grace was the heating pad. It had velcro on it and I used it pretty much constantly. I know you shouldn't but it was the only thing that allowed me to work and not concentrate on the pain.

The doctor said:

Put my monitor right in front of me (it was off to the side)
Put my keyboard on the edge of the desk so my forearms would stop resting on the desk
Stop 'sitting on my leg' - do you know what I mean? Folding it under me and sitting on it?
Do neck exercises - stick your chin out and do sideways figure 8's. Like infinity signs. It will hurt now, but it's something I still do to prevent it from happening again.

I hope you recover soon, I know how painful that can be. I feel for ya! Chat Icon
