Re: Not crying over Yankee Stadium's last days
okay - i have to say that we've been to wrigley and while it was cool to be there and see a game there...if it were my 'home' stadium - i'd feel differently...
it's OLD and it FEELS old... Dave joked that he felt like it was going to come down on our heads...
We've never been to Fenway, but i've read that the seats face the outfield, as opposed to the infield - which is just ODD...
I think it's good to remember the past - but living in it is not 100% necessary...

Re: Not crying over Yankee Stadium's last days
I guess I understand what he's saying, but never having been to the ORIGINAL I really can't say I have an opinion on that--I wasn't born when the renovations were made! I have however been to many games at Fenway (went to college in Boston) even though I'm a Yankee fan, and while it is fun going to games there, many of the seats are terrible and you really can't see well. It's also really small, which once the Red Sox won the World Series made it basically impossible for anyone to get tickets. And I guarantee if Fenway wasn't smack in the middle of Boston where they have no hope of building a new stadium they probably would have done it already.
I will miss Yankee Stadium b/c it's the only stadium I've ever seen my team play in. However, I can't wait for the new stadium which will surely have more ladies rooms (severely lacking at the current stadium) and better views from concession areas in the style of Camden Yards and Citizen's Bank Park (which I love!).

Re: Not crying over Yankee Stadium's last days
It is true that the current Yankee Stadium isn't at all like the original...so you can argue that the Babe, Gehrig etc. never 'really' played there. But I think for many fans, the place is more than just a building. Yeah, we could use an update. It may not have the old charm of Wrigley or Fenway, but it's ours. But fans like me, where this is the only stadium we ever knew, it's emotional for us.
I went yesterday- our last Saturday game in the bleachers- and you just had to see...there was no rushing out on anyone's part. People just stood and looked out at the field (tons took pics of course) - to be expected. But DH and I got emotional. There are so many personal memories tied to this place. That's what is being left behind. I didn't make it to Yankee Stadium until I was in my 20's (Shea was the place to go being a LIer and I always refused)...and years later, I met DH. Yankee Stadium is a huge part of our relationship. I get emotional remembering the early days of our relationship, going there together and how magical it all was.
I can only imagine how much more emotional tonight will be. Yeah, we're excited for a new park - this team and its fans deserves an updated one and hell, it will be SO much better for fans in the bleachers. But it's sad to leave a place where we had these memories. And when I think that Thurman Munson played here....his locker is still left intact....those are things you just can't replicate. To me, that says it all about the building. We won 6 championships in that building. This generation of fans has its own memories....and Jeter and Mo will go down in history the way the greats did. The home plate we see today may not be exactly where the Babe, Gehrig, Mantle and DiMaggio stood, but it's pretty damn close. It's all connected.
I wonder if the author of this article will change his tune after going tonight. My DH would be the first to say it's just a building, it's a dump, we need a new one....but yesterday he was clearly emotional. Like I said, it's more than just a building.
Can you tell this had an effect on me? Hell, I had a lump in my throat going into the bathroom in the bleachers for the last time!! I was like, am I ever gonna see the same attendant again?
Sorry for the rambling.

Tara, we were there yesterday, too! It was so hard to leave... I feel exactly the same way you do, and you put it best. It's hard to see it go...

Re: Not crying over Yankee Stadium's last days
I was there last night. I felt everyone there had a lump in their throat about their stadium. But we all agreed that we are excited for the new stadium. The old stadium is majestic and there are ghosts there. But we now have the opportunity for some new ghosts.
I will never forget my days in the old stadium, but now it's time for a new one.
Wrigley and Fenway also need an upgrade.

Re: Not crying over Yankee Stadium's last days
It's not so much the building as it is the ground... it's sacred ground.
Being there last night was so amazing and special and it's something that can never be re-created. It was truly an awesome night.
