educator job security in a poor economy?

With all the talk of economic crisis and reduced spending, I started to wornder. As a guidance counselor, I'm probably less securethan a teacher.

Do you think people in your school will be excessed if budgets are reduced? Is your job safe?

Just wondering... I'm considering looking into LI public schools this spring (I work in NYC now) but wonder if they'll be fewer positions this year b/c of the economy...

Excessing has been happening like crazy.
The school budgets are cut & every year teachers in my school are excessed.
I was excessed a few years ago & I'm worried it'll happen again.
The teachers in my school without much seniority are worried.
Not sure about guidance counselors though, I would think that might be more secure?

I thought the we had a no-layoff clause at the moment, in the current contract, but I could not find anything on it.

How much time do you have in? If it's even just a few years, you may be safe. I wonder what will happen to LI districts with the economy tanking they way it is- I wonder how school budgets will be affected. I would not be surprised to see layoffs on LI, or hiring freezes.

I am staying put in NYC. I would be afraid to look for another job now. I would fear that

1. They would promise me the job I would quit my job in NYC and then they would say they couldn't hire me

OR

2. Get the job work for a year and then be excessed

I don't see the harm in looking for a job and then making the decision.

We have a LR in my district that left a tenured NYC (yes for a LR!), but she said she has 1 year and 1 day to take back her resignation...may be worth looking into.

unfortunately they can increase caseloads for conselors to cut back...and being a woman is less secure than a man in guidance.

I wouldn't worry too much about losing your job. Excessed teacher/counselors are protected under the UFT. I will stay in NYC for my career, so I am especially grateful at this time for my job. I am also extremely happy for our 8% fixed rate option in the TDA.

If I was in a different district, I'd probably be nervous. I teach music and as everyone knows, the arts tend to be cut first. My district is very high on music...so if I were to be excessed, I suppose they could scale down the program and use less teachers...but I don't see it happening. I !!
