Pls. Recommend Your Sewing Machine

I really want to try to get back into sewing and I'm looking for a machine that is easy to use, portable, and not too much $$$. I don't need it to do anything major, I'd just like to be able to hem, make simple curtains, attempt to make a small quilt (key word-attempt) Chat Icon

TIA!!

K - I have my mom's Singer that you can borrow. She gave it to me when she got my grandmother's. It's a really good one, when she had it in for repair the guy was trying to buy it off her b/c you can't get the metal ones anymore. I'll have to get her to show you how to thread the bobbin, I can never remember. Chat Icon

But I've seen Singers and Brothers at Target and Walmart recently if you want one of your own. If you see one you like let us know, we can get it for your housewarming gift. We wanted to get you something you guys would use.

Aww thanks! But you guys don't have to get us anything!!!! I actually have a sewing machine that I got while I was at FIT, but it's an industrial huge sewing machine with the huge table, and it's been in my parents basement, untouched for probably 7 yrs. Chat Icon I should really just see if that thing still works, but it's really not made for simple fabric projects. It's more for leathers, etc.

Don't be silly!

I'll show you mine the next time you are here. It's a portable one. Maybe when you guys are more settled you can help me with a project I bought fabric for over a year ago. Chat Icon

Re: Pls. Recommend Your Sewing Machine

I am a big fan of Bernina, they are great machines and last forever. One of mine is from 1950 that is still going strong (after a belt replacement Chat Icon).

I had a Singer in college and really didn't like it. I had a lot tension issues and didn't like the horizontal bobbin, but I learned on a Bernina so it could just be what I was used to. My sister had a White and hated it, my SIL uses a Brother and likes it.

I am part of a pretty big quilting guild, the most prevalent machines seem to be: Bernina, Husqvarna (Viking), Pfaff, and Janome.

I have my Singer Merritt from HS still. I agree with PP about the tension issues BUT...it is easy to get compatible parts if/when you need them.
