NYC teachers K-5

Do you have to have individualized goals for every student in your class in the subject areas of reading, writing, math, social studies? AND are you required to write them monthly? I teach regular ed by the way....

yes, weve been doing this for the past year. what a major PITA. i have 26 students, its nearly impossible to monitor.

setting goals is easy..... the rest is a logistical nightmare!

I just can't get over this....I've been with the board of ed for 11 years...took some months off in b/w to have children and haven't been a classroom teacher in 3+ years. I have 23 children and between dibels, eclas and this I am baffled! Stressed out and at my wits end! How could this be expected? I mean aren't we doing what a special ed teacher does but we have normal class size? If they want this done then there should be no more than 12 in a class.

wow i have never heard of this...u have to write individual goals..that's crazy..i'm a special ed teacher and i just focus on the goals for my students (13 of them) ..i couldn't imagine being on top of 25 students and there progress..Wow...The boe drives me crazy sometimes!

I teach k and we started it this year. It is a PIA. We do them every other week but rumor has it we are going to start doing once a month. It is so dumb, the same parents that work on things with their kids are the same ones who pay attention to the goals. The ones who pay no attention to their child pay no attention to the goals. It is time consuming and in my opinion not necessary!

we do them every month. the kids have Goals binders to keep all of their data and extra work (like graphic organizers) it does get easier to manage with each passing month, and i see how it could work, but it is a lot of extra work...especially in a testing grade on top of everything else that we do.

It is way beyond my capability! I mean I can't manage this. I have 2 very young children at home, my husband doesn't get home until 8pm and then I have to work on school work...I mean my regular planning. I just don't know how this is expected when there is no time in the day to do it. I'm going to be in trouble Monday b/c ,my principal wanted all of these goals last Fri and b/w hallway bulletin boards up, genre of the month, report cards, being a full time Mom I just didn't get it in and I sit here right now not even a dent in it!

this souds absolutely insane and ridiculous. under what stupid DOE initiative is this that you have to do this? i would think that for a GENERAL ED. class, the goals for the subject areas would be the grade level curriculum and standards.

i am a special ed. teacher and do this for 7 children. i can't imagine doing it for an entire class of twenty-something children. that is insane and unrealistic.

I am in a middle school. In the past they had to be done for all the students who were ELLs, potential holdovers, or getting resource room. They were called PIPs or "personal improvement plans".

We haven't done them in a while, but I won't be surprised to see them come up again. Because, as you know, we have nothing else to do.

mine are really simple (and not all individualized) for example:

reading might be any skill that was identified by scantron, acuity, or the CARS booklets. i just give them a few graphic organizers to practice on over and over with their various just right books for themonth.

writing is whatever genre we are studying that month. this month, all students are working on writing essays. they are just focusing on different parts. (some are working on basic sentences, some are working on writing more elaborate sentences, etc.)

math is whatever we are really focusing on that month, or a "leftover" from the month before. ie, last month was data analysis and this month is multiplication. three kids are working on subtracting with borrowing.

i made fill in the blank scaffolds for them to fill out at the beginning of each month. then they fill out a reflection at the end of the month. they are surprisingly aware of their strengths and weakness, and this process takes less and less time each month.

yes we just started but so far only for math and reading.. it suckkks and its so much more work. I can see their purpose, but its very hard to do this 3 times a year for an entire class..i teach CTT so not only are we using their IEP goals but they want us to do seoarate goals for them like we are doing for the rest of our class

3 times a year! I have to change them every single month TIMES 24 students!
What gives? There is no uniformity...there must be some loophoel the union needs to step in here!

We have been doing it for the past 2 years. We must do table goals for our guided reading and writing. Then we must have indi. goals!

I have 90 kids (teach 6th grade math) and I have to have/monitor/assess personal goals for EVERY student.

Its beyond ridiculous.
