Parts of California seem really expensive too but maybe they are more equal to Long Island.

Yes Fort Lee is pretty expensive, it's about 5 miles outside of NY. Actually Northern NJ prices are pretty similiar to Long Island prices.

The San Francisco area is much more expensive than Long Island. Crazy. La Jolla is more expensive also (but IMO worth every penny- it's absolutely gorgeous there.)

I know someone from another site I spend a lot on who is in northern CA and is also a mortgage broker. Her house has appreciated insanely (and it was pricey to begin with) and that seems to be the norm. It seems worse than LI, actually.

What about NYC where one bedroom apartments (700 sq ft) are going for over $600,000. Over $700,000 in the nicer buildings!!!

I think its the taxes that are different which make us higher to live- In CA their taxes are much lower than ours- except in the san diego area and I think NJ is lower than us too- got the numbers from a real estate agent.

I live in SoCal, outside LA and our house was soo expensive, like L.I. and already 8 months later, our neighbor is selling the identical house to ours for $129K more!

We bought our place in an up and coming neighboorhood in NYC almost 2 yrs ago. It has almost doubled in price already.

Oh yes, NJ is definitely expensive. Some areas maybe even more so than LI. DH and I were considering NJ...but, because of the prices, we just couldn't do it.

Heidla - I know exactly what you mean and it drives me crazy! Last year we signed another year lease because we figured prices were so so inflated that it couldn't possibly keep going up. Well, surprise surprise those same ONE BEDROOM apartments have gone up on average $100,000-150,000 in one year - its nuts! I don't understand it! And, that's on top of the almost $200,000 they went up the year before!!!!

I know - it's totally insane....they are fetching $1k a square foot in "decent" neighborhoods. Cannot imagine what the better neighborhoods are getting

I was watching HGTV last night, that program, "What you get for the money" (or something like that)..and they said that in La Jolla California, the AVERAGE price for a MID-SIZED home (3-4 br's, 2 baths) is, are you ready for this...............
$1.4 MILLION dollars!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, we got lucky because we caught it just before our neighborhood became more popular and while interest rates were at an all time low. My friend's apartment right around the corner she bought for 250,000 and just had it appraised at 600,000.

La Jolla is an absolutely amazing place. If I had $1.4 million I'd pack my bags in a milli-second for a mid-sized home there.

Even more expensive than Long Island is Greenwich, CT. It is actually amongst top ten zip codes across the US in terms of housing prices. The only town in Long Island included was Old Westbury.
