If you are a knitter maybe you can help me

I am trying to teach myself how to knit. I can make a slip knot, I can cast. I can even do the knit stitch. But where I have my problem is the first row, after I have casted on. I am doing a knit stitich and going very nicely until I get to the very last stitch which is the original slip stitch. After I transfer that last stitch over to the right needle there is a loop of yarn. (you know that loop of yarn that connects the two needles as your are transferring. How do I get rid of that yarn.

I hope someone understands what I am trying to say and can help me????

if it's what i think it is... i think you're initial slip knot is not tight enough.

which cast on method are you using?

are you casting on with both needles or just one?

can you take a picture?

I've never used the method that you're describing. I use something that's called a "long-tail cast on".

Anyway, reading you're post, I would say that libby is correct, that you're slip knot may not be tight enough.

If you can, post a picture so that we can see for certain.

Re: If you are a knitter maybe you can help me

I have had a knitting breakthrough.

My hairdresser helped me with my little problem. It was the way that I was casting on. SO she taught me another way and I have been having a great time since. I am making little coin purses. I have three done and one more to go and then I am going to make a scarf and then on to a afghan!!

glad that you have figured out your problem...how do you cast on? or how were you casting on?

was it that you were not tightening that first stitch?

I was casting on with one needle. She showed me how to use both needles. WHy it is making this difference I dont know. It had nothing to do with the tightness of my casting on. My slip knot is the same.

i'm so happy to hear that you're moving on and making STUFF!!!!

at the beginning, there are so many things that we do wrong without knowing it. for the longest i was knitting into the back of my stitches AND twisting them. so hard to un-learn something!

would love to see pictures of the coin purses you've made!!
