How long can you keep meat in the freezer?

How long can you keep meat in the freezer?
Chicken? Beef? Pork? Before you throw it out. I thought the rule of thumb was 6 months, but the max. I go is 3. Is that still too long?

Really! I keep it until i cook it. Sometimes longer than 6 months  If it has freezer burn i will throw it out though! But that almost never happens
