I HATE MY AP WWYD? **UPDATE**

She is so unnecessarily mean! She comes into my class the last 5 minutes of a 90 minutes period. She walks around and then fixates on the fact that they are doing vocabulary. (It is a 9th grade English class.)

What is wrong with vocab? Isn't in on the SATs? Don't they use it everyday? I could have given her a million ways they use it in class with other lessons.

Then her questions start: Did they do any writing today? Did they do any reading today? UMMMM hello look at my agenda on the board! They did all of that plus some.

The worst part though is she is saying this in front of my students. So after she leaves they of course are all over it and all I hear is "oohhh Miss you got in trouble" "I guess we never have to do vocab anymore since that lady said so" ect

Would you say something to your AP tomorrow if they did that to you? She completely underminded me in front of my students.

(It is my 7th year in a NYC school.)

So I didn't sleep at all last night. I spoke to her this morning and told her how I felt. She did apologize and say that she didn't realize the students could hear her

I would ( but I am tenured)

I would drop in an first start by asking if she had any more questions about the lesson she walked in on.
then I would politely ask that next time she refrain from commenting in front of students but that you would like to meet with her after to discuss any issues or questions.

If it were me, I would be pretty heated from that experience

The next day, I would probably approach my AP and say that while I appreciate her input, I would prefer if she would speak to me at a time when I am not in front of the class. I would also explain that I demand a certain level of respect from my students which is difficult to maintain when they see me getting spoken to like that.

Speak up for yourself. She may be an AP on a power trip, but you need to show her you can't be abused! What she did was totally uncalled for!!

I bet if she did this to you, there are other teachers who she has also done this to and who feel the same way you do!

Perhaps she doesn't remember what it was like to be a teacher. It sounds like she was abusing her power.

Don't let it get you down tonight. Relax, go to sleep, and deal with it tomorrow. I learned in my short experience so far that school stress just ain't worth it!

First of all WOW! I am a math teacher and even we are forced to integrate vocab in every lesson. Never mind the fact that you still had them doing work at the last 5 of a double. I guess she didn't get all of the balanced literacy stuff and Regents emphasis that all the rest of the NYC schools obviously got.

Second of all. you have tenure. Tell her behavior was unprofessional and unappreciated. Document it. Just in case.

This is really indicative of what's wrong with the city schools these days. We have these APs who are supposed to SUPPORT us, and they nitpick over things that aren't important while neglecting important things. This woman has clones all over the city because I hear stories like yours a lot (I read a lot of NYC teacher blogs). I'm really angry *for* you, that you have to deal with this. If you feel it's harassment, document it. I hope your chapter leader is useful.

Its always ohhh I thought they couldn't hear me...riiiight.

I bet shes one of those APs who wasn't in the classroom too long.

I'm glad you talked to her and that she apologized. You need to keep an anectedotal record with a date and speak to your chapter leader about it. You can ask him not to pursue it, but just so that there is a record of your complaint. Is the principal supportive of teachers? If so, if this happens again you need to write him/her a letter. I did that once and the AP got in trouble.

I'm an EA with the DOE and I know for a fact that many administrators get the job not based on what they know but who they know. Hence the incompetence and unprofessionalism. From personal experience I also know that administrators will bully those who allow it and steer clear of those who stand up for themselves. You did the right thing by confronting her when you were calm.
