What do you do...

My student "fell" in front of a train this morning and died...

I am so sad, there are no words to express my grief... what do I do tomorrow... she was liked by all of her classmates... how do I handle this?

All you can do is ber there for the students and acknowledge that their grief is very real. One of my students passed away 6 years ago this week and I still think of her and what a tragic waste.

I would take some time out of the class period to talk about the student and remeber the good things about her, since she was well liked.

I hope the school will have some greif counseling available or at least do some kind of memorial.

I am so sorry. Chat Icon The best thing you can do is be there for the students and let them know that it's ok to be sad and that you are, too. I know that when I lost a student (wow... almost five years ago...), I let his class write their thoughts and then just talk to each other and me for the rest of the period on that first day back. Please feel free to FM me if you have any other questions about any of this or even if you just want to talk. My heart really goes out to you. How horrible. I'm not sure how to handle it because I would probably be asking the same question.

Do you teach in Calhoun? I'm at Merrick Ave and we just heard about it. I am so sorry. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes, I'm at Calhoun... We are so unbelievably in shock right now - she was such a great kid... so smart and passionate about learning. This was the last student we thought would do something like this.

How was it today? How were the kids? Did you go to the memorial they held tonight at the station?

I am sooo sorry to hear this, I would definitely involve the school counselor and come up with something together.

Re: What do you do...

something similar happened when I was in HS

but it was 2 girls

I am trying to remember how it was handled- but honestly- I have very few memories of that day about school

my Dad woke me up- told me what happend

told me not to worry- I wouldn't have known them

got on the bus

went past my friends house

cops every where

we all lost it on the bus

got to school- not sure I went to classes

sadly- she made hints to me and I never picked up on them- it could be any kid- that's what I learned from this- they were both smart, good students, played sports etc
