Is it Possible to be Fit & Fat?

I feel fit but Im a lil on the chunky side (still trying to loose the baby weight) BUT... I just got back from the gym. I ran a mile in 10:20 (My best time EVERChat Icon) and worked out for an add'l 50 mins!!..I do this 3-4x a week.

I had a physical last week and I have excellent blood pressure, a strong heart, low cholesterol, good blood and sleep well. I work full time and run around for my 2 kids and 2 pets and SO of course. All is great just overweight with a high BMI.. GO FIGURE!!

Im will continue to push myself to get stronger and loose the extra weight but Im proud of myself so far...

I need to lose about 30 pounds, but have super low BP, low bad cholesterol and can still run a mile in 7 min or less (obviously not 5 in a row though)

but when I was 30 pounds lighter, I was in much better shape, but I'm sure there are people 30 pounds lighter that are in a lot worse shape than I am now KWIM?

YES, I have thin friends who cant run on a treadmil or lift weights. My 10min mile is an accomplishment for me.. I just starting running.. never jogged in my life! Who knew at 36 yrs old I would start...you can only get better as you get lighter..right?

That's like me!

It's sad because I want to get more fit but I am actually embarrassed to go to the gym. I can't run or lift weights or anything, but I am thin... When I tell people I want to start going to the gym, they look at me like I'm crazy or have an eating disorder! I just want to be healthy too... but I'm embarrassed to go Chat Icon

someone here just posted about a 80 year old marathoner who started at 64!

and I always think back to the father, ridden with heart disease, who started long distance running and triathlons so that his son in a wheelchair could feel the wind in his face

Dont be embarrassed! Your doing a good thing for yourself, thats the message your sending when you to to the gym!! Your confidence will build and you will feel awesome.
You have an advantage by being thin, you will see results sooner then someone that has to loose weight.
I used to be jealious of folks that worked out, took time for themselves and felt good.. exercise is so important to overall health to get goiing, YOU CAN DO THIS!!Chat Icon

Thanks - you are so sweet!

I started to try going over the summer with my friend... and we thought that classes would be more fun. So I made the mistake of trying Vinyasa Yoga and totally overdid it and have a bulging disk because of it! I'm kind of scared to get back in the gym... I'm actually still having treatments on my back because of it! Chat Icon

Oh goodness Chat Icon You dont have to be a Denise Austin for your gym comeback.... start slow and listen to your body, you shld be a lil soar 24-48 hrs after a work out but you dont have to bend like a pretzel and do 300lb squats!! Start with some cardio and light weights..floor execises..stretches. If your really concered ask your Dr first. But dont let that hold you back.

Thank you both.

I just have literally never worked out in my life. I'm lost inside a gym! I thought the classes would be more fun for me... but they are too intense.

I am definitely NOT trying to lose weight. We are actually doing fertility treatments now so I am just maintaining and trying to be healthy, KWIM?

I don't even know where to start!

There's a first time for everything! Chat Icon Chat Icon

If the classes aren't your thing, don't do them! Find something that you think will interest you. Whatever you do decide to do just start slow and work your way up.

If you are working out you will definitely be burning more calories so you will probably have to eat a bit more than you do now to maintain. There's no reason why that can't be healthy as well - some nuts or a protein shake or protein bar would do the trick!
