Anyone ever been to a sleep center?
I'm thinking of sending DH to a sleep center. I can't take the snoring anymore. I've been using a white noise fan to drown him out, but now with a newborn baby, I wake up at the slightest noise. I'm losing a lot of sleep and we really need to do something about it.
I was just wondering if anyone had been to a sleep center...I'm wondering if we need a referral, or if I should have him see an ear, nose and throat doc first...

I had a referral but I am not sure if I needed it or not. It might depend on your insurance.

Re: Anyone ever been to a sleep center?
my dad went to one on Hempstead Turnpike...he did need a referral from his doctor.
an ENT may be the best first place to start.
Main question - are there breaks in the snoring? My dad used to snore BADLY and then nothing for a minute and then SNORE again.... After he went to the center - he found out he stopped breathing 62 times a night....

YES, he does stop snoring from time to time. As I'm lying awake, I'll think "Oh good, he stopped!" but it's never long enough for me to fall asleep I am VERY worried that this could be sleep apnea. Sometimes he holds his breath and makes this moaning sound. I really want him to have this taken care of.
He is terrified they're going to make him wear the CPAP mask to bed...

Re: Anyone ever been to a sleep center?
If he is not breathing properly...the sleep mask would be the best possible thing in the world for him. My dad refused to go to a sleep center for YEARS. I got engaged and told him he was not permitted to walk me down the aisle until he went, because i didn't want to have photos with someone who would be dead in a year. Harsh? Yes - did it work, YES.... He made an appointment that day to see his doc and get a referral. He tells me rather regularly that i saved his life...
My dad's main symptoms & questions about them - 1. Does he fall asleep a lot during the day - in the middle of things? my dad would fall asleep on his lunch break at work, nod off at his desk and on the train on the way to and from work. This happened because your body is not effectively sleeping at night, so the sleep you get is NOT the 'good sleep'...because your body is struggling to sleep.
2. For some strange reason - is his neck large? My dad's neck was/is HUGE and that's something - i don't know why medically...but it mattered.
3. Is he on blood pressure meds? My dad was (on a MUCH lower dose now) and the reason was his heart was CONSTANTLY working overtime instead of relaxing at night...causing his blood pressure to skyrocket.
4. Is he overweight? My dad was about 30 pounds overweight...he is now at his ideal weight, after 2 years of using the machine. His sleep is now more 'productive'...his body gets adequate rest, he has more energy during the day...it's a WIN/WIN situation..
If i were in your situation, i would sit down DH and explain to him what i wrote out above - seriously... Do you want your kids to grow up never knowing daddy, because he was silly enough NOT to do something about it? It's a harsh line to take - but one that might change how he feels...

Re: Anyone ever been to a sleep center?
DH went to Winthrop for his sleep study and it was the best thing. He was diagnosed with sleep apnea and has been using the CPAP machine ever since.
It was a few years ago, so I don't remember if he needed a referral. You could always call the center itself and ask them just to be sure.

Thanks so much for this. DH is overweight, and I noticed that when we were BOTH skinny, he was not snoring. Other than that, nothing else out of the ordinary. I'm going to call tomorrow and see if we can make him an appointment--this really scares me.

Re: Anyone ever been to a sleep center?
i'm TRULY sorry - i wasn't trying to scare you....but if you can catch this NOW....he'll be so much better...he may be angry and upset NOW (if he is worried about the sleep mask)....but he WILL one day thank you for it.
My dad was not so 'angry' with me about my ultimatum, but he was 'coolish' with me....telling me when the appointment was....and after talking with his therapist about it...he let it go. Once he got the report - he changed his tune.....he was so thankful and appreciative... Now - when he gets on the scale - he calls me and says - you made me lose 5 pounds last month...etc...
He is living SO much more of a quality life now.... He had a great experience at the center he went to - i can get you the name of where he went...
Here's the info for where he went:
Island Pulmonary Assocs PC 4271 Hempstead Tpke # 1 Bethpage, NY 11714 (516) 796-3700? (516) 796-3205? - Fax

Re: Anyone ever been to a sleep center?
Don't be scared!!
DH found out at his sleep test that he only sleeps 14% of the night!!!!! He is awake 86% of the night!!!!!!
He has been doing well with the CPAP machine.
