Crochet project - what am I doing wrong??

So as I mentioned in my post yesterday, I am new to this - just got started a few weeks ago.

I am crocheting a wrap (using "cotton ease" yarn) and the longer it gets, the narrower it gets Chat Icon I am not missing any stitches at the ends, I have inspected every row carefully (doing a double stitch for this project). What am I doing wrong???

Re: Crochet project - what am I doing wrong??

my first thought would be stitches at the end.

are you counting how many stitches are in each row?
if you started with 20 and still have 20 but it's narrower, then it could be your tension. this is VERY common when you're new at something like crochet.

no, I didn't count how many stitches I am doing per row, wish I would have though!! Chat Icon next project I am definitely doing that.

what do you mean by tension?

I am so far into the project but I feel like pulling it all out now... it looks terrible ...

kinda like the Eiffel Tower in my avatar!

don't worry about it looking like the eiffel tower... you have no idea how many eiffel towers i made before i really got the swing of things. it's part of the process.

what i mean by tension is how tight or loose you hold/pull the yarn as you create each stitch. an uneven tension is the most common "issue" to anyone who is new to any yarn craft.

i would suggest signing up for ravelry.com... those people over there can help fix ANYTHING.
also, youtube has a lot of great videos on both crochet and knit that could be a great resource.

oh, a side note: even if it's not what you want it to be, it's fun to keep projects like this... it helps to remind you of how much you learn as you go.

i still have my first "stocking"... oh, gee! too funny how horrible it looks lol

I agree...this used to happen to me all the time when I first started crocheting... I would end up with trapezoids, especially when I was doing a DC. As Lizbeth said its best to count the stitches to make sure that you have the same amount in each row

libby - thanks for the tips. I already pulled out my "eiffel tower" Chat Icon and started over. I am just starting out - so it's not a big deal to practice more by starting over.

I am now counting!

I find that even when you think you did the last stitch, there is one more to do, so counting is the best way to go.

Good Luck!
