"How to" book reports
Has anyone done a how to book report with their class and have your directions/requirements for the project that you want to share?

Basically I tell my third graders to use time order words to explain "how to" do something. They need to come in with written step-by-step directions. Then they need to come in prepared with everything to teach the class "how to" do that thing. Some people have done making snowflakes, a dance, to origami. They love doing it. Hope I made sense!

I start off by doing two things.
1-I ask them to tell me how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (which I actually make as they tell me). So when they tell me to put the pb on the bread, i put the container on the bread, they laugh and realize they have to be specific.
I then also do another experiment. I have them take their notebooks to the meeting area. I read them a really difficult or vague how to on how to draw something. When I'm done, we compare pictures and laugh at how different they all are.
Then I read them another how to on how to draw a picture but this time it's much more specific and when we're done, we all have similar pictures.
By doing these, they understand that they have to be clear.
We then discuss sequencing words.
They pick their topics, work on them and at some point, exchange them to see if partners can understand and follow the directions.

I love this idea!!!!!!!! I may do a spin-off with my class!

I teach HS and haven't tried this on HS level yet. It seems like a fun and easy project! Good luck with it.
