Do you think you need a trainer to see results?

So I joined a gym on Monday Chat Icon and I receive 2 free training sessions. I had my first one yesterday and the trainer said that the only real way to see results is with a trainer. I know she was trying to sell the package but that comment kinda bothered me. I also didn't think she was all that great but made my 2nd session with her since I felt bad making it with someone else.

If you know what you're doing in the gym then, no, you don't need a trainer.

Re: Do you think you need a trainer to see results?

You dont need a trainer if you know what to do. You will see results.

I used a trainer in the past. Im not going to lie but I loved it and it was worth the $ I paid...which back then, didnt matter to me as much.
He pushed me hard!

I then worked out on my own and had trainers chase me around telling me Im doing this wrong or not doing this right and If I use a trainer I would learn.

THAT annoyed me and I almost got one fired.

Re: Do you think you need a trainer to see results?

A trainer is only as good as the client. Yes, I do owe a lot of my weight loss and tone to my trainer. BUT, I didn't just see my trainer. I busted my arse on the days I didn't see him. I think trainers are good if you don't really know what you are doing. And, honestly, most trainers aren't that professional. They don't train properly. You really don't even have to do anything to get a training certificate.

there are loads of resources out there to help one with their workouts. You just have to look for them.

Re: Do you think you need a trainer to see results?

I'm a personal trainer and I'll honestly say that you don't always need a trainer to see results. It's really a very personal thing, some people can push themselves hard enough, some people need more motivation and guidance. The bottom line is if you bust your butt 4-5x a week you will see results - trainer or not.
And as an educated trainer with a 4-year degree, and not just someone with a piece of paper, I can say that not all training is created equal. If you're not happy with someone, don't use them. Don't feel bad for their lack of ability. If I were you, I would call and cancel and try out another trainer.
A trainer can help a lot, but it's not the only way, and I would personally never say that to someone to try to make a sale.

Thank you, I think I might cancel because I was thinking about it. She was complaining about the music they the gym was playing and then I felt like she wasn't really paying attention to my form. I told her that my legs are very tight, especially behind my knee's but she only showed me one stretch. She didn't even stretch out any muscles that we worked out Chat Icon
So any advice on what I say to her if I see her after I cancel?

Re: Do you think you need a trainer to see results?

If you are "new" to the gym environment a trainer is a good resource to help get you acclimated, but once you have it down you can defintely do it on your own. If you are not comfortable with that trainer find another one, don't feel guilty. You want someone who is going to listen to you and not get you hurt

ITA with the previous posters. I have never had a personal trainer before because for me personally it was never necessary.

I would just tell her that your schedule has changed and that you cannot commit to training any longer. Just be polite...I am sure she won't think anything of it! Chat Icon

Not necessarily... when you're first starting out... no... you should see results as long as you are consistent.. but for someone like me, who has been working out regularly for YEARS and isn't seeing the same results as she used to... then YES... a trainer is important because they can help you target the areas you need to work out and give you that push you otherwise wouldn't give yourself.

I can't kick my arse the way a trainer can... and trust me, if I had the means to work it out, I would definitely hire a trainer.

take the 2 free sessions and try to learn as much as possible... work out on your own for a while and see how it goes...

Re: Do you think you need a trainer to see results?

I have never had a trainer and I workout hard!! The problem is most of my workout is cardio heart pumping exercise and the resistance training I do is not consistent, althought tough and challenging.

I am actually seeing a trainer for the first time Monday. I have been working out for years but have reached a point where I work out hard and am not happy with my body. I have been watching people workout with this guy for a year now. He is tough and doesn't do just the typical machine stuff he has people all over the gym doing crazy stuff and I love it.

So I don't thing it's necessary I think it's an added bonus. It's expensive though, so I feel like do what you can on your own and then once you want to take your workout to the next level hire a trainer for a bit. I don't plan to see this guy frequently...maybe once a week for a few weeks and then take it from there.

I had a trainer and I loved it. He definetly kicked my butt, but its expensive and thats why I stoped. If you can afford it go for it but if not, you can definetly work out on your own and push yourself.

Absolutely NOT!!! I saw results without a trainer...It takes a really long time though..it took me about 8 months to a year to see ab muscles. But if you know what your doing, I find it a waste of money

What do you want to do? Lean? tone?
muscle?

I will do a work out plan for you in a notebook. show you how to do the exercises and then you can do it..

also you can come by me and work out in the gym in my development..

I also think I might join a bigger gym once I settle..

where did you join?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!! As long as you are motivated enough and know what you are doing then no way! I would talk to the trianer during your 2 free lessons about the areas you really want to work on and they can gove you good tips and exercises but after that just keep it going yourself.

Re: Do you think you need a trainer to see results?

you don't NEED a trainer to see results, but i have one and think it's great. she does a different routine with me each week, which gives me lots of ideas of things to do on my own. it also keeps my muscles guessing and not getting too efficient at any particular exercise. she also pushes me really hard.
