What would you do?

So my firm is hiring a new boss to run this (NY) office. Three candidates went through 3 rounds and the leading candidate came here to meet the NY office (the ones he would be working with).

He said somethings- but it seemed that they were just lip service. I don't know. He was too charming... and he said he was very laid back, but then said some other things that contradicted that. We all had the same impression.

So when the main office called me and asked what I thought, I didn't feel right saying what I truly thought. I don't think I have so much say... so I was as diplomatic as possible- said he would be a "strong manager" and when she asked if I liked him, I said, yeah. She asked if anyone had anything negative to say, but I didn't know what to say so I said I would ask around. He has already met with this woman 3 times- and she loves him. I asked her what she thought of him and she really liked him... so I kept my mouth shut.

What do you think I did/could do.

First, think that this is a bad idea. The employees shouldn't pick their boss. People who are hiring him need to hire the right person for the job.

They are putting you guys in a bad spot.

Since that's the way it is, stay as neutral as possible and give very light negative feedback if you feel comfortable.

Are there two others that you will meet?

It's a tricky situation, because it does sound like she is pretty set on picking
this guy.

You could say that he seems really qualified, but you weren't sure if it would be the best fit, personality wise witht he other peopel in the office.

You could ask if the other 2 would be coming to NY, a nd if she syas no, just kind of end with am "okay, I'm sure he'll do a great job."

I'd want to take the opportunity to give an opinion, sicen I was asked, but not say anything that could hurt you if he was hired & it got back to him eventually.
