Re: AFP?

MAKE sure you ask your dr about the false positives...
I went and my numbers were sky high and I had to go through all this genetic counseling etc, they even wanted me to have an amnio.

turns out there was nothing wrong.

Same thing for 2 of my cousins, 2 of my sisters and like 3 co workers.

So do not get upset if the numbers are not normal...ITs more liekly to have numbers out of range then in range..

Good luck!!

Re: AFP?

the risk of a false positive was too high for me - and I would have the baby no matter what so we opted NOT to have it done.

Re: AFP?

No way for me! They are going to get rid of this test because of the high #'s of false positives. Ins companies have looked at it has fraudulent. If it comes back positive, there is no intervention to make a condition better, it is just so you can know, some people want to know, I;d rather not, especially if nothing can be dine to improve the situation

Ditto for me! I didn't get the amnio either, son was totally healthy! There is a real high rate of false positives.

I totally agree with you - (emilain). I am declining the test as well. Like everything else, it's a personal choice.

Re: AFP?

is this the same as the triple screen test? I am at such a loss as to which tests to have done.

For my dr. yes, it's the triple screen test. They do all 3 at once. Ask your OBGYN just to be sure.

Re: AFP?

When my doctor asked me all he said was "do want to have the AFP test", because they really need your permission to do it, he also told me its more for women over 35. BUT I just looked online for you under Triple Screen Test, and it seems that the apf is one of those tests, so now I'm more confused! Either way - I passed on it, since I was one of the people who got a false positive. I look at it this way, if you are going to have this baby no matter what, than what can you do with this information? Unless you want to have an amnio, which I will not, to determine if the test results are correct. But again, this is a very personal choice, but I knew for me I wasn't going to do anything with the results.

Re: AFP?

I did it and my results came back great. I chose to have it done because I wanted to be prepared for anything.

Re: AFP?

my dr. didnt make it seem like i had a choice, he drew the blood in his office and that was that. He did tell me that there was a possibility of false positives but everything came back fine.

Re: AFP?

My doctor never asked me if I wanted to do the AFP test.... just drew blood from me. The results came back +. After suffering a late m/c, they did a pathology on the fetus, and the results came back -.

Next time, I will opt NOT to get the AFP results. Too many high +s with that test, but I'm keeping it regardless if it's true or not!

Re: AFP?

I also opted NOT to get the test done-I knew dozens of people with false positives who were stressing over nothing.

Re: AFP?

I'm in the minority - I had the test done, knowing the percentages of false positives. Looking back, I'm SOOOOO glad I did it because around week 25, at my ultrasound the radiologist thought he detected a Choroid Plexus Cyst, which, in and of itself isn't harmful, but can be a marker for a genetic abnormality, like Trisomy 18. If I hadn't done the AFP I would have been freaking out, but, because my AFP test results came back normal, and the level 2 ultrasound didn't show any other markers for Trisomy, I could relax.
