I am very careful with it. I know a few teachers that have students as their friends. Totally inappropriate because some of the students have their profiles open with alcohol in the pictures. It's wrong of the teacher to accept them as friends.

Re: Teachers/TA's and Facebook

I am on Facebook and so is DH. Everything is on private settings for both of us. First of all posting inappropriate pics is stupid anyway and then NOT to have it set on private?? You deserve to be fired!

I would never ever let befriend any of my students on facebook.

Re: Teachers/TA's and Facebook

wow! how dumb of them! unless perhaps, honestly, they did not know that you can set it to private? also did they specifically list the district on their info. page as their employer?

mine is set on private and only friends can see it-- not friends of friends and i also do not list my district's name as my employer. i also ignore requests from former and current students to be my friend.

Yes, it's not to smart on there part, but to be fired, that is kind of harsh, what about a warning first.

Re: Teachers/TA's and Facebook

I have all of my settings on private and I deny all friend requests from students. I teach 8th grade and they all think it's hysterical that I have a Facebook page, so I get requests all the time.
I love my students...but they're not my friends. They don't need access to my private life.

Those teachers showed really poor judgement....I'm guessing the FB aspect was only part of the reason they were fired.

I definitely would never list the district as an employer, but I do have a few former students as friends. They are in their mid-20's though, they befriended me when a former student died and it was nice to speak with them.

on the otherhand, I had a current student at the time) find my wedding pictures on LIW.

Really dumb to not have it on private. Chat Icon I wonder what kind of pictures they posted? drinking? drug use? nudity? I think firing is harsh in cases of drinking or clothed sexy poses but necessary if the pictures involved drug use or child pornography. (in addition to being arrested!)
