Where Do You Job Seek/Hire From?

So here is the situation… we need a marketing/education director for our company. We can afford to be fairly picky with this hire.. we want a pro but we don’t want someone with a giant head or someone used to barking out orders without the willingness to DO everything they ask of their team. Someone who will get their hands dirty – but still has the professional demeanor necessary to head up a rapidly growing department.

I don’t want to do CL or Monster because you get too much of a mixed bag. Newsday is pricey and I’m not convinced it’s worth the cost. I’m not entirely sure a headhunter would bring us what we want.. we’ve never used a temp agency and I’m not certain about the cost benefit of that type of service when it comes to a more high level hire..

The question is… How do YOU look for employment when you are job seeking? If you are responsible for hiring… what sources have worked best for you in the past relevant to bringing you the type of qualified candidate you desire?

To be honest (and I don't know if this will help in your situation) I try to put the word out through people I know in my industry. I figure if you know people, they are more likely to send someone good your way than risk their own reputation.

I also used my school's employment website to advertise before because it's free, but I never got anyone from there to respond to anything.

In the past when I've used sites like you mentioned, I have gotten people who have ignored the job description try to apply.

You could search on LinkedIn..I was actually recruited by someone looking for a sales rep in my industry but notr my area of expertise-but he found me on LinkedIn. Otherwise, I would say a headhunter.
