I am sorry to crash but this is the stupidest comment I have ever heard.
Before I became a mother, I was (and still am) a compassionate daughter, sister, friend, wife, granddaughter, teacher and overall person. Having my daughter didnt make me more compassionate, it just made me compassionate to one more person in my life. That comment just makes me so mad!!  
I saw this show.
Actually what he said was that "his mother believes that a MAN can't be truly compassionate (towards a woman) until he has had a child". Meaning, he learns patience that way, and most of us women need men to be a bit more tender and patient with us (which most men aren't).
Just wanted to add my .02 cents, if this makes anyone feel any better about what he said.
