Poetry Ideas
Anybody have ideas for poetry for 2nd or 3rd grade?

You can use Sharon Creech's (sp?) Love that Dog to show that poetry doesn't always have to rhyme and how the way the little boy wrote it on the page shows how he wanted to get his point across.
You also can never go wrong with Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein!

I did diamante poems with my class. They needed to know nouns, verbs and adjectives which is what we had been working on so it seemed perfect.

Yea April is poetry month!
I actually hadn't heard of it until this thread but I did a google search.
It's a short poem that uses nouns, adjectives, and verbs. Look it up!
I loooove that we are doing poetry this month! My lesson planning for language arts takes like 10 mins each lesson as opposed to 30 because I love coming up with ideas!!

Scholastic has this great series of books called "Kids' Poems" and they have one for just about every grade..the second grade one is great..I ended up making transparencies of the poem samples to show kids writing for kids their age (I told them they were old students, even..haha) but there are great ideas/tips in there...

everyone keeps saying that they have never heard of them. It is one of the few poems I remember from my childhood and my children did GREAT on them. I actually made them into kites for an INCREDIBLE bulletin board thanks to my awesome para. I'll try to post a pic tomorrow.
