question

ive been searching but i cant find an explanation...does anyone know the actual reason for closing schools if there has been confirmed cases of swine flu?

is it to clean, is it to keep the germs from spreading so quickly, as they always do in schools? i just want to know the reasoning behind taking such a huge precaution.

Re: question

to keep other kids from being infected and spreading it to their families and their coworkers - a vicious cycle! Since someone has been infected they don't know who else has been exposed so instead of taking chances of no one else being exposed they close school in the hopes that the masses of students and teachers won't get sick... then they clean the school with anti bac cleaners since the virus lives on surfaces for about 72 hours.

Re: question

thanks Chat Icon that's kind of what i figured. i read that a person is contagious for up to 7 days after their symptoms disappear...and it is scary how quickly something is spread through a school. but i also keep wondering why this? people get infected with 'regular' flu all the time and schools are never closed, you know?

I have thought this too. They never take protocol like this for the 'regular' flu!

http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/swineflu_you.htm

How long can an infected person spread this virus to others?
At the current time, CDC believes that this virus has the same properties in terms of spread as seasonal flu viruses. With seasonal flu, studies have shown that people may be contagious from one day before they develop symptoms to up to 7 days after they get sick. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods. CDC is studying the virus and its capabilities to try to learn more and will provide more information as it becomes available.

People are contagious for 7 days after they show symptoms. For the majority of people, by the time they are able to function again, they are no longer contagious.
