i don't get it. i make phone calls that i'm interested in volunteering my time to help and when i get a call back, it's like THEY are doing ME a favor. Why is that??? Has anyone ever experienced that?

Re: volunteering
What kind of volunteer work were you looking to do? That does seem quite odd.

i want to do some work with a breast cancer organization. so i made a few calls. one was a half hour away from my house yesterday and was really quick to point that out and was like 'well maybe you should go work somewhere that's closer to you.' I said i don't mind driving a half hour. they said 'well maybe you should go somewhere closer.' i said i don't mind driving again. then they sighed and said what are you interested in. so i rambled off what i'd be interested in, one of which was pr (that's what I do for a living and mind you, it was one of their choices on the form i had to fill out on line.) the woman snapped at me that they weren't hiring and they had someone to do that. so i said ok, i just said that b/c it was on the form i had to fill out and since i had experience in that area i was trying to be helpful and where would they need help. she just said fundraising (duh, they are a charity.) and told me about their upcoming events. i said great, i'm available to help out on weekends or at night and i'd love to help out with the planning too and on the day of. she said she'd make a note of it and give me a call if they needed help. that was it. she was just very cold on the entire call.
i don't expect them to kiss my @ss at all but i didn't expect it to be like i'm doing them a favor either. i thought a charity would be at least a little happy to have someone else to volunteer.

Re: volunteering
You might want to call back and see if you get a different person that may be more helpful (and more appropriate to be working for a charity...) or even see if you can get someone higher up. I wouldn't want that person helping me recruit volunteers!!
GL!! (sorry you need luck trying to do some good in the world!!)

Sorry that happened to you....try not to let one phone call discourage you from doing something great.....I agree w/pp try calling again..... It's been my experience that the bigger organizations and hospitals are sometimes the hardest to volunteer at. If your flexible about where you want to give, try a smaller facility like a nursing home or a hospice...GL

That WAS a smaller organization!!! (Sorry, I'm just very annoyed...) And that was the second organization this has happened at, the first was a bigger one. I just really don't get it. Why would someone be mean to someone who is just trying to help??
