becoming a teacher

Hello all,

I'm applying to graduate career change teaching programs... Is there a high demand for ESL teachers?

I'm worried I'll have studied and buried myself in student loans for nothing because I won't find a job after I graduate. I've heard it's hard to find a teaching job.

Any advice for a newbie?

Thanks much!!

Re: becoming a teacher

Hi and congrats on your career choice! I will say that Math and Science teachers are in demand more often than other subjects. English and Social Studies are two fields that are difficult to find a job in, since there are many graduates who are certified to teach these two areas.

I think that ESL will be slightly difficult only because schools usually have small programs for ESL, which mean the teacher turnover rate doesn't move that quickly. HOWEVER, do some research into schools that have a big ESL program and target them when applying.

Good luck to you!

I am an ESL teacher and from what I understand, there aren't a ton of ESL jobs out there right now. Your best bet is applying to schools with very large ESL populations. Put your resume everywhere.

ita - some schools have huge esl populations - so you'd have to target those
that being said, at the elementary level i think esl teachers and special ed teachers are more in demand than general ed teachers

You'd probably find a job in the city pretty easily. I get the impression, just from my school, that the city will have more openings in the next few years beause lots of people took advantage of the 25/55 retirement. And ESL will continue to be a need, I think.

Re: becoming a teacher

Thanks for the responses! I'm nervous because I'd really like to study TESOL but then I am worried that I'll be out of luck when trying to look for jobs... Of course, my college is making it sound like there's a HUGE demand for esl teachers etc etc, but I don't know if they're just selling a "product" kwim?

I haven't started yet, I start in the fall... Until then I'm going to contemplate maybe going into biology... is that more "in demand"? are jobs easier to find in biology? grades 7-12.

Thanks again!
