Re: NYC teachers
If the union is smart, they will ask for no raise but try to get back the two days in August, and get rid of extended day. It's not useful, from what I see. Since it's not really mandated, we have a terrible time getting the kids to stay who need it. The parents love to point out to us that we can't make the kids stay, and they don't.

I don't think extended day is useful either.
We have it in the morning in our school and most of the students think it's OK to not show up to it even though they are required to be there. They still think it's optional and they either don't come, or they stumble in when it's almost over! I have made numerous attempts to get them to show up and be on time, etc but when the parents don't get it either, it's hard.

Re: NYC teachers
This happened a few years ago. I believe that we are supposed to work until the 27th (unless it falls on a weekend like this year because summer school orientation needs a day or two and the timing won't work out if they forced us to come in on the Monday). If it falls on a Monday the last day for kids is the Friday (still a half day for them) and we have to go in on Monday. Most times you only end up in for a few hours until checks and stubs come in. Stinks but at least it's not for the whole day.

I agree. And honestly, our pay is really comparable to other districts. If we can now just get TIME back, we'd be golden!

Re: NYC teachers
What all the 'yes' voters of the last contract need to realize is that WE NEVER GOT A RAISE! We only got compensated for the extra time we are now putting in, "extended day" , and those August days. I hope that they ditch this extended waste of time and I am all right with no raise, b/c if they get rid of it then actually we really did get a raise last contract. I also hope this MOnday in June thing doesn't pan out next year!

Remember, the whole platform was equal time and pay to the suburbs..they do NOT go in those 2 days in August and they also only work 180 days NO MATTER WHAT..so they get days banked in for snow days we never get and then get it back on other vacations (ie. 5 day Memorial Day!) So, now, once again, after all of the contractual stuff...we are working more for less once again..we need to wake up and fix it!!

I totally agree. I think for us younger teachers, we were scared of striking and losing our jobs. We def. settled too soon.

I really hope we can get rid of those 2 days at the end of August... I hate that we have to go in those days, it's such a waste. Hopefully next contract they'll amend that.

Agreed. It's helpful for new teachers, but that's about it!

___________________________________ No, I work on Long Island some districts have to work 183, 184 days. we do not have banked snow days, as a matter of fact we lost friday ( memorial day) because of snow. We do not get unused snow days back.

Re: NYC teachers
Next year we don't go in until Sept 3rd....
The extended time was put into our class periods ( I teach high school). So instead of 42 minute periods we have 45 minute periods. My school day when we first started was 8:25 to 2:30. Now it is 8:12 to 2:39. I'd love to get that time back!!!!!!!!!

It's been awhile, but when I was in NYC - the last day was always 6/28 (unless it was sat or sun - then it would be the friday before)
and we always went back on the friday before labor day.

Re: NYC teachers
I really can't see the mayor reducing the school day...it would be like taking a step backwards (for him...) I'm thinking we'll just go contract-less for a while...then again, it is an election year. I just hope and pray that no more time is tacked on...i don't care how much$$ they offer!

I was with ya! I voted against it as well. I couldn't understand how people didn't see that it wasn't a raise. A raise should be when salary increases without extra duties increasing.
But, I'd take no "raise" and get rid of extended day in a heartbeat!
