NEED ADVICE

We had Jacob's CPSE meeting and they are recommending that an inegrated setting preschool would be beneficial for him. I don't know how I feel about this. I wanted him in the school setting he has been in with a SEIT.. They also said that his scores were too highfor speech and ot?? which I was surprised....

So I am keeping my mind open and I need to go look at schools.. They gave me a list and said choose... I can' believe this.. How Do I know which schools would best suit his needs... It is mostly for social anxiety... He is average for everything else..

I am also planning on taking him to a developmental pediatrician.. any one been to Dr. Jack Levine???

THe schools I wan to look at are:
ACDS in Plainview
The Barbara C Wilson Center in Woodbury
Little Village in Seaford
Variety in Syosset

Please some advice...

I don't know how much I can take with all the craziness in my family his past year

Re: NEED ADVICE

hey, i'm not sure about the schools. i've heard of all of them being good but have no personal experience. you'll get a feel for them when u visit. also when u visit ask them for some parents numbers so you can talk to them about the school and any questions u have.

my sons see jack levine. we went to the practice before knowing there was any sensory issues with my ds. honestly, his bedside manner $ucks but he spends a lot of time with us and knows us very well b/c of that. and the most imp. part is he is good and if doesn't know something then he refers you to a specialist.

if u have any spec. questions fm me.Chat Icon

Re: NEED ADVICE

Did you tell them you wanted a SEIT? Did they deny that?

I don't know any of the schools since I'm in Suffolk, but I do hear Little Village is great based on what other people have posted on here.

i don't know specifically what you need the school for but i'll give you some info on the schools in general.

my son went to little village for their EI program. Loved it. best teacher. great facility, state of the art. i know the 2 people who ran the place are retiring, not sure how that will affect things though. definitely the best facilities of the lot. they take alot of kids with physical handicaps too, so be prepared to see all sorts there.

ACDS... people there seemed very nice. i know one mom who raved about the place. but i couldn't get past hte fact its an old elementary school and was in desperate need of a paint job when i looked at it. this was several years ago, so they might have improved the look. they docus mainly on downs syndome, but have classes for all types of kids.

Variety focuses on autism. good program, but they have a reputation for placing kids even if the classroom isn't the most appropriate for the child. they like to fill their numbers. but i have a friend who was very happy with them for her son who is autistic.

Barbara... otherwise known as North Shore. nice new facilities. not quite in the range of Little Village, but definitelty better than most. really liked the person in charge of tours and screenings. seemed very nice. a good program.

reputatiion wise, little village is top, north shore (barbara...) is second. after that i can't say who would be third.

best bet is to go see them all, but don't see ACDS first if you might have a problem with the look of the place. i saw them initially, and could never get past how dingy the place looked. but i've heard good things about the program.

depending on what type of environment you're looking for there are other schools too. my son went to Boces ECC in levittown for 2 years after little village. and i was very happy with them too.

Thank you sooo much for your input..
I put calls to all of the above.. ACDS and Barbara C. Wilson only have waitlists and I am waiting for phone calls back from the other 2. I heard that too for Varietytoo..

In regards to have I asked for a SEIT, that is what I really wanted but the district is recomending an integrated school setting. If I go see the options out there since it is MAy for September and a. I don't like what I see for my child or B. THere is no room for him in these schools, then the district will need to figure out something else fo his needs.... I have to take this one step at a time..

Re: NEED ADVICE

My ds has been attending ACDS since September for a speech delay. I can't say enough about them. He has done so well going to school and his therapists are great! The building is older than some of the others, but they have made a lot of improvements since I first started.

His EI therapists came from Little Village, who was also wonderful. We did look at this school, but at the time the only class that was available they felt my ds was too high functioning for it.

HTH. Good luck!

You have to ask for what you want. You can't wait for them to offer it to you. If you wanted a SEIT, at the meeting you should have said I want a SEIT and I want my DC in the least restrictive setting. I have talked to a lot of parents and also have my own experience to go on. You don't always have to agree with the school. Just remember that for the future.

You also have the right to request class profiles of the classes you visit at the various schools. That will tell you what the classifications are of the other children in the classes, so you can determine if a particular class will be a good fit.

ITA with this, also I am wondering why they are recommended something center based if DC isn't receiving any other related services. If the only service that DC is receiving would be SPED I would push for the SEIT. Chat Icon
