why are "oprah" books different??????
my reading ebbs and flows. sometimes i can't read enough, other times i don't want to be bothered.
i'm on a reading kick, right now. i'm also spending time reading about reading... sites where people talk about books.
ok, my question... why on earth are there "oprah" books??? just because she said, "hey, read this book", does that really make the book a SEPARATE entity from the original??
i know that books have different publication dates... but how can oprah putting her name on a book really make it DIFFERENT?? or is there something i'm missing?

(I'm only half kidding.... the other half is serious. Just because she's Oprah gives a whole other level to anything she touches....  )

Personally, I like the Oprah books (her original pics...not so much the stuff from the last few years though). Most of her pics are the type of books that I like to read, so I know that if a book has her seal on it, then I will most likely enjoy it.

its simple - if you like her picks then its a great guide if you need a new book to read.
i know that if my sister likes a book, i will like it so I will pick it up too
same thing with Oprah, I think I have liked all of her picks. . .

i understand the draw to her list
what i'm asking is why are those books listed twice? i was looking at a list of the most influential books of the 20th century. some books were listed twice: once just the title, then again with "(oprah)" next to the title.
has she made changes? has she added a preface? i don't understand why they would be on the list twice. are they, somehow, different???

She probably gets a cut out of the books sold with her seal on them, so they are given a new ISCI code so that sales can be directed properly, you know?
I worked at barnes & Noble.com at the height of the oprah book club craze .. i should know this, but i don't know for sure ...

i don't know... this is part of what i was wondering...
* is her name on the book what makes it different?
* did she change anything in the book?
* does she offer a preface or additional info to make it a separate entity?

Oprah does not get a cut of anything, she makes no money off of it.
The books only have the seal on it. People are obsessed with Oprah and anything she recommends. Just look at what she has done with her Oprah's favorite things episodes. People rush to the stores and buy them.

Where was the list from?
I also find it odd that they would count it twice, b/c most popular books the have a few versions (hardcover, mass market, large print) & they all have different ISBNs, but for ranking purposes they are the same book.
If you are just ranking sales, then yes, they are different editions.
