Anyone come close to using up all their sick days?
I have been so sick lately and currently sick at the moment and was out the second half of this week.
What happens when you use up all your days, do you start getting docked pay?

If you have a doctor's note it doesn';t come out of your bank.
Otherwise if you use all your days I believe (not 100% sure) you can borrow up to 20 (?) days. This is for NYC DOE.

You can borrow up to 20 days. I have -15 right now but was out on maternity leave.
As for having a doctor's note...if it is true that with a doctor's not they don't take away you days I have a lot of days they owe me for the last 7 years...

Is that definitely true for all NYC schools? I have just one sick day left but have had notes for almost all of my days I was out. Does that mean they didn't get taken out of my bank? It was marked on my time card that I was out those days.

The borrowed days portion is correct. I have never heard of them not taking bank days if you have a doctor's note.....like I said: if that is try then the DOE owes me a lot of days back!!!!

Re: Anyone come close to using up all their sick days?
That is wrong info about the doctor's note....it does come out of your bank.
You get 10 self treated days(sick days without a note) per year. If they are medically certified (doctors note) they do not count towards the 10 days. What i mean is this: say your out 10 days, but 3 were medically certified, you still can take 3 more self treated days, otherwise known as days without a doctor's note. Your 11th self treated sick day is a day without pay regardless if you have days in the bank. If you use all your ST days up and are out with a note for the 11th day, you will get paid for the day as long as you have days in the bank. But there is such a thing as a medically certified day without pay. Trust me I know from experience.
The union recommends that if you are truly out sick, then bring in a doctor's note eventhough you don't have to unless you are out 3 consecutive days. Once you have documentation of a note your principal can't say there is a pattern of absences and those medically certified days are 'off the table' if you ever get called in to speak about excessive absences.
Anymore questions feel free to FM

No - Long Island public school. The disadvantage is that most schools allow you to build up your unused sick time over the years and then you get paid for them when you retire. I don't have that....but maternity leave is a breeze!

No, I am one of those freaks who hates being absent. I have not called in sick at all this year. I feel like it creates more trouble than it's worth as far as my students go.

I hadn't taken any days for the whole first half of the year, but for the past couple of months I keep getting sick!!! And, sick in the way where I can't go to school... can barely get out of bed What's sweet is when I come back, my students always say how much they missed me!

Re: Anyone come close to using up all their sick days?
I rarely take sick days so I have built up quite a lot over the past 8 years. This is a good thing because I was told 2 weeks ago by my doctor that I couldn't work for the duration of my pregnancy. I wasn't planning on taking this many days but thank goodness I have them saved.

As long as you have a note from your doctor saying you can't work, you're out. I had terrible swelling during the last part of my pregnancy, so I was able to get a note from the doctor, and take the last month of my pregnancy off from school. And, if something happens after the birth that causes you to be out longer than the allowed 6-8 weeks, a doctor's note will allow you to be out as long as you need to be. All within reason, of course!

This sounds amazing. I will be using my last sick day tomorrow, but won't be back until Wednesday at the earliest
