I'm back from my consult with Dr. Rosenfeld
I'm back. For those of you who don't know Dr. Rosenfeld he is the director of the human reproduction center at NSUH. He helped my friend get pregnant with her first child (7th IUI) and another friend whose tubes were blocked and had a lot of scarring get pregnant with her daughter and then triplets. He was one of the first pioneers in the field, studying reproductive medicine as early as 1971... ten full years before the first "Test tube baby".
He looked at the copy of my chart from RSofNY and his first question was, "Why did they put you on Prednisone?" He said he hasn't seen that since the 70's when that was protocol but most RE's agree it is completely outdated. I didn't want him to think I was a b i a t c h but I told him that in all honesty I didn't think they (previous RE) knew or wanted to know how to treat me so nothing would surprize me about anything he would find in my chart. I also told him that, from my discussions with over a dozen women, they put everyone on th same 50mg of Clomid.
He did an exam and everything seemed normal with the exception of "no follicular activity"... yes, I knew that. He also asked me to chart which I do and I told him that RSofNY never wanted to see mine as they don't believe in it.
I did express my desire to move right onto IVF and my window of opportunity being the summer to do such. He said let's do an HSG test first (next Tuesday)... more time off from work... they will love me as he believes I do have PCOS with so far no other complications.
He prescribed me Metformin (Glad to read in Lauren's post that you lose weight on it because I gained some on the Prednisone ).
DH goes in for another SA this Saturday. Dr. Rosenfeld wanted one done in his lab and from some of what I heard from RSofNY's lab I'd rather have a more accurate picture too.
That's it

Re: I'm back from my consult with Dr. Rosenfeld
Hey T!
Good news! Wasnt the difference in the clinics AMAZING? Such a weird difference, but it made you feel better no?
When we did our IUI at NSUH I spoke to the andrologist and he said he worked at RSONY years ago and that the lab at NSUH is much more advanced.
The results may be the same, but when it comes to IUI, IVF, you have a better lab performing and thats a GOOD thing!
Im so glad you are moving forward...
good luck with the HSG... TAKE LOTS of MOTRIN beforehand...hope you have one of the painless ones.
Dr. Rosenfeld did mine and although It was very painful , it was FAST, very very fast...
Good thing to come!

Re: I'm back from my consult with Dr. Rosenfeld
Okay, so that all sounds pretty positive!
I've been diagnosed with PCOS too and the Metformin alone made me ovulate and that's really really encouraging. Now we're doing the Clomid-Met cocktail! Which it sounds like you'll be doing as well.
It sounds like he was really knowledgeable, but was he also personable? Hopefully you won't have to go through the drama you did at RSofNY.

OK, I'll try to explain but where is Redstar when you need her?
Provera brings on your period. For annovulatory women, like myself, we need a jumpstart to trick our bodies into thinking we have ovulated. Usually a few days after stopping the Provera you get your period and your "system is reset".
Metformin lowers your insulin. Insulin can dominate hormones, throw them out of wack, and thus no ovulation. So by lowering the insulin my hormones should be normal and ovulation will take place.
That's my "lay-woman's" explanation. I am much better teaching world history and economics
Thank ladies

Re: I'm back from my consult with Dr. Rosenfeld
I'm glad you had such a positive experience. I just started going to NSUH myself and I am seeing Dr. Chu. I too have PCOS and i'm on Metaformin. This is my second month on it and I got AF!!! If your dr. didn't tell you metaformin could have some bad side effects however, not everyone has them. Also try to start out on it slow then gradually make your way up to the full dosage. I'm still stuck on 1000 mg (i'm suppose to take 1500mg) but my stomach doesn't agree with it. Best of luck and lots of

Re: I'm back from my consult with Dr. Rosenfeld
Great News ...Theresa !!!! I am glad the consult went well....!!!
Terrific explanation regarding provera and metformin lol When your insulin is raised...that usually means your cells are blocking the insulin from getting in., therefore, the body produces even more insulin. This causes fat cells to develop and store estrogen, interfering with ovulation.
Prednisone is used for different things...it suppresses the immune system and NSUH will not treat you if you are on it. It's one of the reasons I can not continue at NSUH because, my issues are centered around my immune situation and I need to be on prednisone.
Prednisone is also used for elevated dhea which is associated with pcos, but nowadays they usually give injectibles for that.
