Suspected sensory issues

DS was just evaluated by EI and they suspect there could be some sensory issues. I initially called them for speech so a spec. ed teacher and a speech pathologist came and did the evaluations.

They are coming Tuesday to go over their finding and his plan. Being they mentioned possible sensory issues, will they automatically have an OT evaluate him or is this something I should request? (I already put a call in to the coordinator). Being there are possible sensory issues, does he need to get a psych and neurological evaluation or is that only if suggested by the OT evaluation?

If they suspect sensory issues they will probably offer you an OT eval. In Suffolk County, in order to qualify for OT, you must have a fine motor delay. I requested it but DS did not qualify.

As for the psych. I requested it also. I'm not really sure why, I guess it depends on the evals., but they don't always offer them.

Our EIOD is great! She has given us everything we have asked for. Sometimes they can be tough, so don't be afraid to ask for what you think he needs.

If OT was "needed" the special Ed evaluator would have mentioned it already, ESPECIALLY if she/he thought a psych evaluation was needed also. You don't get OT or any other services that your DC does not get evaluated on. If YOU feel that your DC needs an evaluation you can contact EI and ask them to send an evaluator for OT.
