Re: Medford
my best friend grew up there and is now living there, just 1 or 2 blocks south of the train tracks, off Jamaica Ave which is off 112.
Every town has it's good and bad areas and every school district is what you make of it. Pat-Med doesn't have the greatest rep, but I think it's one of the better districts out there. Worse ones are Islip, Longwood

Re: Medford
I am a Pat Med graduate and liked my school and got a great education. As someone poasted earlier there are good and bad areas but the bad areas are closer to the expressway. Other than that it is pretty central as far as location.

Re: Medford
what's untrue Red??
IMO, I believe you can be in the best school district and still end up a delinquent or you can be in a not so great district and still go on to college and make something of yourself. It's more than just "What school you're in" or how great the "reputation" is.
Three Village has a great "reputation" but you don't hear about the kids that get "pushed" through because all they've done is cause trouble or the fact that police are there on a regular basis. And no one really knows about their PM School--for kids that "just can't seem to deal" with real school. Yet, you have people from that same school that go on to Harvard....
so school "can be" what you make of it and what your parents instill in you. I have a friend whose 4 daughters went to school in Centereach and she didn't like it, but her girls didn't get into any trouble-they did what they were raised to do-go to school, get an education and not fall prey to the peer pressure. Yet, I had an ex at Ward Melville that was nothing but an addict and couldn't get his act together-they pushed him out come graduation time because they were tired of dealing with him- he didn't have enough credits to graduate "per se" but he did "graduate"

I agree in part what you are saying... what i do not agree with is the Longwood is the "worst" and pat-med is the "best"
yes there are delinquents in all SD's but Three Village, Sachem is MUCH better than Pat-med.. I would send my kid to middle country before pat-med. Do i like Longwood no but i wouldn't call it the worst either. I think that Riverhead is worse along with William Floyd

Re: Medford
I wasn't saying Longwood was THE worst...just using it as an example that there are districts worse than Pat-Med as well as districts as good as and better than Pat-Med.

I think Islip is better than Pat/Med IMO. I have friends teaching in Pat/Med who have told me that the violence has been becoming increasingly a problem. I think these districts have changed since us late-20 somethings graduated, but from what I have heard and read about test scores/violence, etc., the Islips (West, East, and Islip), would be a better option than Pat/Med. That said, I found much cheaper homes in Medford, but I wouldn't buy there.
ETA: Perhaps you were just referring to Central Islip but did not specify?

probably Beth....
I don't know all the districts anymore and goodness knows I've been out of the school system so long that things have probably changed immensely

i went to longwood! and i have not a bad thing to say about them! my teachers where the best out there! i still to this day talk with some of them! a few where even at my weddign. now like others have said there are there bad neighbor hoods and good ones. but for the most part it was the best and i could not have asked for more. my daughter was in longwood for along time then when i got married i had to switch to william floyd now there is a bad school. i can not wait to move the h e l l out of here!
