Turning Over In Crib

Andrew is 19 weeks. This past weekend was the first time he turned over from his back to his stomach and back over again.

I am terrified now though -- He rolls right over his sleep wedge, and even kicked off the side with the velcro adjustable piece. I assume I can just get rid of it since he seems unstoppable. My fear is that he'll roll over onto his stomach and get stuck there and have trouble breathing.

Twice this weekend I heard him whimpering in his crib and when I went in he was all the way over against the side of the crib on his stomach, face down and crying. He had the most heartbreaking little face on.

Am I just being paranoid? Is there a trick or something else I could do to ensure he'll be alright?

Sarah started doing the same thing about 2 weeks ago. I called her pediatrician and they told me that once they can roll over you don't have to worry about them sleeping on their tummy, they are able to move their head and not smother themselves in the mattress. They told me to stop using the sleep positioner since she was squirming out of it.

Twice I went in and found her face VERY close to the bumper, so I ordered a breathable bumper off the BRU website (they don't have it in the stores). It's ok, it keeps her arms and legs in the crib, and it's made out of mesh so I feel better about her rolling around in her sleep and being able to breathe. It's not really effective for padding, and DH is really concerned that she's going to whack her head on the slats of the crib, but agrees this seems like the best solution for now.

ETA: she was crying when she rolled over in her sleep the first week, but now is happy as a clam when she wakes up on her back, belly or side. HTH!

As long as your boy can hold up his head and neck he has the ability to move his head so he can breathe if he should end up on his belly...

my son is just 4 months and sleeps on his belly quite nicely :) no worries :)

jeez - your babies are all rolling over - mine is so lazy (4.5 months). He did it once both ways at 3 months and hasn't done it since. He goes to his side and that's it.

Marissa is now 10 months old and whenshe started to roll over I left her yes she would roll all the way to the bumpers but she would be able to breath. thats how she sleeps now her face has to be close to something or she has to have a blanket of some sort by her face to fall asleep

I feel a lot better, thanks. Last night he didn't cry as much when he ended up on his side or his stomach.

I might look into those breathable bumpers too.
