I got a bill for $17,000 from my health insurance once for a surgery i had because they typed in an old member ID i had years before and the letter said i wasn't covered...i almost died..then realized the issue and didn't owe anything.

I got in a car accident way back when and went to Nassau County Medical Center. They took two sets of xrays and sent me on my way.

At the time, I worked for an insurance brokerage and actually wrote my own auto insurance policy. The accident was deemed not my fault by both companies.

So when I obtained the hospital bill to submit it for payment, it was over $800. I was like wow... I didn't know xrays were so expensive. When I looked at the part where it's supposed to be itemized, there was only one word: Norplant.

I was like eh? What's Norplant?

I could have just submitted it and they probably would have paid it. But I called NCMC to ask about the item. And found out that Norplant was birth control, the kind that gets inserted under your skin.



Turns out, there was another woman with the same name as me, in there on the same day, and she got MY bill which was significantly less. I got the error fixed but thought it was quite a coincidence. My maiden name isn't like Mary Smith or anything but it is a fairly common irish name.
