OMG, I feel bad for complaining then! I work in a district that PRIDES in having small classes. Coming from someone used to 23 in a class I know I'm going to feel the difference! Where on earth am I going to fit all of those desks! Chat Icon

I know how you feel. I think I have an AP CLASS with 29 kids or something. I really don't know HOW that's going to work. Chat Icon

When I started at my school, 7 years ago, I have 4 classes with a total of 90 students. It was heaven.
Last year, I had 5 classes with a total of a little over 130 students.
I feel badly for the kids, because it definitely changes the way I teach and the assignments I can do with them. Chat Icon

I remember that from when I was an NYC public school KID. I'm sorry. There was one year in HS when my health class had to be moved to a bigger classroom. I give you a lot of credit. Chat Icon

I wish I had 29 students in my class! On average I have 35-38 in my class. Last year, my smallest was 23 (only because a whole bunch of kids moved and they didn't allow anyone else to go into that class because it was at a special time) and my largest was 40. My first year teaching, I had 42 in two of my classes. It's hard, but you get used to it and adapt. You definitely have a different dynamic with the students in the larger classes as opposed to the smaller ones.

This subject makes me furious. There is all the talk of differentiation, response to intervention, and raising test grades. How the heck are you supposed to do this as one person teaching this many children??? In addition to this, there are scores of certified teachers who are not able to find jobs. The solution is to give more teachers jobs and lower class sizes. Money spent on this is obviously not a priority. I have 3 certifications and have not been able to land a permanent spot after teaching for 5 years. I know so many others in the same boat. It's crazy.

And now we have to set individual goals for each child before each unit, plus keep runnign records in our TAN notebook. And now that the test is later in the year there is more new material to cover and more for the kids to retain.....how is this all supposed to happen!?!?

The goal thing is just ABSOLUTELY ridiculous!!! My students are in special ed. They ALL have an IEP. So, they ALREADY HAVE GOALS! Goals that are way more important than these new ones we have to do.

What's SO stupid as well, is they have to know what their goals are if those quality review people come in and ask. I mean, REALLY?!?! My kids need to remember to put periods at the end of their sentences and memorize their multiplication times tables. Now they need to take out time to make sure they know their goals in case some quality review people come around and ask!??! Chat Icon Here's MY goal: To make it from September to June without losing my mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does that count?! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

For a middle school it is
34 for a regular class
36 for honors
25 for a CTT

But, I heard that schools can claim hardship b/c of the budget and be able to make classes even larger. Don't know how true this is.

Ugh, I know the feeling very well. My AP classes were typically 28ish. I think I even had 30 one year. Meanwhile, the person who had the class the year before me had 19! I wonder if the fact that she was the English chair that year helped. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Otherwise, yeah, my regular classes were right around 32 usually. Multiply that by five!
