Re: Xanax Question ?

Don't you have to be on it for a long time? I think the Dr. just wants me to try until the Lexapro kicks in.

I am getting scared...

Re: Xanax Question ?

Actually Xanax is a very low potentially addicting drug, any physician can give you this information.

No, it is HIGHLY addictive, even on the RX it will tell you this right on the drug....

The thing is not to stop it completly without a dr's help and or use only when needed.

After the death of my Daughter I took it daily in small doses for about 6 months..IT was hard to come off of completly..and your body feels weird for a while but you can use it as "needed" or small doses....

I think the low dose is like .025

Re: Xanax Question ?

i take it as needed all the time. and have not one problem with it. i can get a rx for 90 of them and it can last me a long time. even taking it every day for 2 weeks straite and stop with no problem. i was also on pecocetes(sp) for 4 years because of women problems and again no problem in stopping or after effects. i you need to make sure you have no history for certin medical problems like seizures or heart problems and you should be able to take it as needed. i have a very strong will power in that part. you need to learn when you needed it and when you don't that is the trick to taking it! good luck! and if you ever need to talk i am here!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Xanax Question ?

The warnings on the bottle might say that but any doctor would say the potential to be addicted to xanax for a short time use would be very rare.
I asked the docs in my family when i saw this post cause I take it sometimes for my panic attacks and have had addictions to other things in my past.
Again, maybe it depends how long U are on it for.
But regardless, I am sorry for your loss.

Re: Xanax Question ?

I would assume that everyone's dosage would be different - no? I myself have not taken it - but was told by my therapist to get a prescription. I am worried about becoming addicted. But I worry about becoming addicted to a lot of things....
I would maybe speak to your doctor about any questions since you are also on Lexapro.

Re: Xanax Question ?

I think the addiction potential depends on the individual. I have seen people very addicted to these types of drugs, and the addiction is real. Other people can take them without becoming addicted. The risk of physical addiction of short term usage are not that great, but the psychological addiction can be great in some people, especially when used long term. In most cases, meds like xanax are only supposed to be used for short periods of time to get through a "rough period" while starting better long term drugs like prozac or lexapro, since these meds take weeks to start taking effect. Very few people are supposed to take these drugs for long periods of time.

One word of warning, this happened to a friend of mine. If anyone here gets drug tested for their job or can be randomly tested, just know that they do test for this classification of drugs (due to the high potential for abuse), and if the prescription that you have is older than one month and you test positive, they consider the drug test failed. Sure, present the bottle, but if it is older than 1 month, they dont consider it valid and you have failed the drug test. This girl that I know had a rx for 2 weeks written after her father died a few months before, and took the leftover pills once and a while if she needed to sleep, and then was tested for a new job. Because the rx was more than 1 month old, they do not consider it current and valid, and she was not hired because of it.

I agree with this, as this is also what a very good physician told me. That with the short term use of this particular drug, it is very unlikely to become addicted.

No it is not "uncommon" it is very common and I am not sure the "good" Dr. is giving all the facts, regardless of the lenght of time it can be addicting so I was just warning her
