That is the EXACT thing I thought!
I'm predicting more time in some manne, some change in benefits, and/or some connection to merit pay.

Having 10yrs in the system, I'd much rather a 2% raise but get rid of the 371/2 minutes, circular 6 and regain Brooklyn-Queens Day!

Nooo...this is another way to screw us somehow. NOT worth it. I don't want a raise b/c I don't want to be effed in the arse by the mayor!

Re: NYC Teachers - did you see this?

whatever offer is made, it is your choice whether to vote for the contract or against it. We'll never get a raise, only an increase and it's guaranteed that we'll always have to give something up to get it.

Re: NYC Teachers - did you see this?

I say screw a raise and get rid of extended day. It is such a PITA. I think it may work in elementary school, but try keeping high school kids for the extended day. Once they learn that it is not a graded period, they are out the door! It is such a waste of time!

ETA: I never voted for any of the contracts! But people do because they are afraid!

I'm so with you about extended day. I'd be so happy to leave 37.5 minutes earlier each day.

Something seems off about the city stating there is money for raises before the contract is even presented. Usually we don't hear anything until the contract is ready and all the details are disclosed.

I am very suspicious. Bloomberg HATES us. I concur with everyone else that I'd rather get back the stuff we gave back in 05- the right to grieve letters, extended day, etc. than get a raise.

I think he put it out there b/c he knows that the public will freak out that we are getting a raise in this economy (as the title of the article so clearly proves), so he will be justified in asking for the world from us.

I think that we are we are going to be judged by all the data on the ARIS system. Right now our principles get it, but they are not supposed to use it to evaluate us. I think that he is really going to push that.

Re: NYC Teachers - did you see this?

I want to know what we gave up to get the days before labor day back? Happy about it, but happened suddenly at the end of the year. Weird! Also in HS the periods are extended throughout the day. They incorporated the time into the periods.

Yes- at the end of June we have an extra day. Pretty much everyone in the entire tri-state will be done on Friday, June 25. However, we have to go in on Monday, 6/28.

It was odd, the timing of getting those days back. I will likely go in the week before anyway even though I hate the message it sends (i.e. I don't mind giving up my vacation days for no pay!).

At some point the other shoe will drop and we'll learn what exactly we have to do to get that 8%.

We had to go back the following Monday even before we got the 2 days back at the beginning of the year. The only thing that changed is that the kids now come back on Monday as well. Originally, they ended on Friday and we ended on Monday (which made no sense to begin with)!

what we "gave back" was support for the creation of tier 5 and some % of future trs contributions.

we deserve the 8% raise and it was factored into the budget awhile ago. especially since all of us will have much larger classes (therefore doing even more work) over the course of the next few years due to the budget cuts.

we will never get back teh extended day. we should just get over it. i think the "give back" to earn the 8% raise will be turning the extended day into part of the regular day with whole class instruction.

only time will tell...

In my school extended day was put into our regular schedule. Instead of 42 minute classes we have 45 minute classes and 2nd period is 50 minutes. It has been like that for the last two years because the 37 1/2 minute "tutor" time did not work at all.

Totally forgot about that! I did see that before we got the days back and was Chat Icon.

I logged onto ARIS last night and saw that I already have 31 on my roster. I find that I always end up with more kids than I have on day 1- some kids move but we seen to admit even more. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: NYC Teachers - did you see this?

I think it is a straight up bribe. Our contract expires 2 days before election day. They already created a new tier that screws new teachers pretty badly. I am really hoping this is a ploy on MB's part to buy our votes. I'll take the money and ruuuuun. No way am I voting for him!
