Spinoff to Facebook: Would you consider making a separate Facebook page for students?
I have had so many kids request me...past and present. I have actually thought about making a separate facebook page just for students. I know my admin. is ok with it, because they actually condone Facebook as "the new telephone". I would be sure to only friend students on that page, so that none of my friends could write anything "questionable".
What do you think?

No way. Even though I never post anything close to contraversial I would never allow students to be a part of my personal life. I teach HS and have many students request me and I always deny them. I even make an announcement in class that I am not their "friend" so I wont accept them as a friend on facebook. They even ask if they can friend me after graduation, but then current students who are their friends will have access to my page so I still say no. There is a fine line that should not be crossed JMHO

I think she means a seperate page for her students apart from her personal one.
I have considered it. It would be a good way to post homework and maybe even have a class discussion.

absolutely not! completely unprofessional IMO. facebook is for social networking, and it is not appropriate for students/teachers

The only reason I would not is because if you see anything illegal going on and they are still enrolled in your school district, I am pretty sure you would have to report it. (ie underage drinking, drug use, hazing, cyber bullying)
If they have graduated and want to be your friend, then I think it is different.

Nope, no way. My life is my life and I don't want students becoming more than part of my professional life.
I teach secondary, and for this reason, I don't have a facebook page at all. They have ways of finding you.
Not to mention that here in NY, there's been problems with teachers posting stuff (drinking etc) on their pages and it turns into a big problem when someone finds it.

Exactly what I was thinking.
I don't know...I think to treat today's teaching methods the way they were when we were younger is not smart.
I think one of the biggest ways that many of us go wrong is in trying to "fight" the ways of the 21st century, you know? I actually won my 21st Century classroom equipment by writing an essay about how we as teachers need to embrace the changing technology, and the fact that our kids are allllll over this stuff.
I was taught that our students SHOULD know a little bit about us. My students know quite a lot about me...nothing very personal, of course, but they know that I am married, that I have a baby, etc.
I think I am going to set it up. I think it would be an awesome way to keep in touch with past students and to keep present students on par. I don't see what the harm is--I'm on FB every day anyway--so long as it's monitored, I actually think it would be an awesome thing to do.

This is my philosophy EXACTLY. I would never EVER accept a friend request from any student enrolled anywhere in the district (for so many reasons.) Once they graduate from the high school, though, I do see FB as a good way of keeping in touch with some of my students who I honestly think are pretty great people. I don't have any pictures on there that I wouldn't put on my desk in school. I don't use it that way.
ETA: I do think it depends on your district's policy regarding this type of thing. Mine has no problem with teachers being connected to alumni via FB -- many are. But I wouldn't be if it were frowned upon. I'm glad it isn't.

no and dont ever!
ive heard stories of teachers getting fired because of just sending the student a message saying they cant be friends
alough there are teachers i know who have their students as their FB friends. on their reg account and that is def not a good idea

That is a very good point. Never thought of that.
We had a speaker come to our school about this very issue and because of this I would not friend students on FB until after graduation. I do not want to have this responsibility on me.
My sister is in 10th grade and while she has no incriminating pictures or posts on FB (since I monitor her usage), I know a few of her friends do.

A colleague has a Myspace for students. I am eeeh on the idea. I won't condemn someone for doing it, BUT I don't think it's for me.
I did however create a blog for my web design class. We (myself or a guest blogger from the class) create a QOTD that has something to do with current events and we discuss it on the blog. It was great last year during election season.
It was considered their homework for the class but I really learned so much about them from having those online discussions.

You can make a class website to post hw, have discussion etc. You don't need FB to do that. Remember, while YOU may be creating a separate account for them, they won't be creating one for you and you wll see all of their dirty business. It may also give them a false sense of "closeness." I teach HS and do not accept anyone who is currently enrolled in my school. After graduation, we're cool.
It's really nice to see where some of my students are now. I just got requested by a girl who is in her 2nd year of Law School, another has his MBA and instead of getting a "job" he is doing stand up comedy, one is a photographer for the NYT, others have joined the military. I don't think that once a kid leaves your classroom you necessarily have to leave each others lives. I also don't think that teaching is a profession that is always fits the definition of "professional" to a T.
Maybe I have had cool students, but I kind of like keeping up with some of their doings.

I wouldn't do it. Like PP said I'd be more worried about what I'd see on the student's pages.
I love that you are trying to integrate technology and reach the kids in an arena they love but isn't there another way you could do it? A class wikispace, website or eboard? There are so many free tools out there- I bet you could find something they'd love.

I do. I have done 2 leave replacement and taught seniors. I was sincere when I told my students that I would be available to them still if they needed any help or recommendations. Facebook was the best way they could keep in touch with me as I move from school to school (unfortunately  ) I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING PERSONAL ON MY PAGE.
* Oh, and I do make it a point to explain that I will not be viewing their page! I just offered this to graduating seniors

My collegue had considered it but decided against it since she was afraid that a disagreement between students might occure where she would have been able to see it (on her page). She didn't want to be responsible.
I won't accept friend requests from students.

Trust me when I tell you that under no circumstances is it EVER appropriate to have an online relationship with a student. I have refused former students as friends.
If you had any idea how many teachers and other school staff members are under investigation for innappropriate relationships with students and how they have ties through the internet as well as cell phones you would be shocked. This is not a joke. It is highly innappropriate.

I would never do this.... just the thought of it makes me think that this is inviting trouble into your life/career.
I have my own page which is obviously private and even my picture is private if you are not one of my friends and I will never add co-workers either.... facebook is for friends only.
I know you want to make another one just for your students, I just dont think its appropriate and will only create drama...somehow...someway
