Re: sociology...

My mom is a sociology professor. She has had students go on to become social workers, adoption agency employees, and HR administrators, as well as other professors.

I have a BS in Sociology and work as an administrator in a not-for-profit, providing residential services to mentally retarded adults. I am the Assistant Director but started as a Case Manger right out of college and worked my way up through the ranks! Chat Icon

Re: sociology...

I have my BA in Sociology and ended up going for Masters in Social Work. Without the Masters, you can work like others said as case worker, service coordinator, human resources...I think you can do more with sociology than a BA in Psychology but I could be wrong.. however,my understanding is that without a masters or doctorate in psych you are really limited. Anyone know for sure? Sociology is fascinating!

I have my BS degree in sociology.
I was going to go back for my masters in social work (for school) or guidance counseling. I didn't get to go back, but, maybe when my kids are in school I'll work on that goal.

I agree that you can do "more" with sociology vs. psych with a BA/BS, but with either degree you have to realize you will be starting in an entry level position, ie: not making lots of money and possibly getting the less desirable shifts if there are rotating shifts. But def. if you want to go anywhere with psych you will need Master's or PhD level degrees.

I even think with a MS in psychology it is hard to find something (I have one for schools, but I noticed classmates in non-school track having troubles)

my friend majored in soc and is in HR at a large insurance company.

Re: sociology...

I graduated with a dual major in sociology and psych. This was back in 1998 though where it was easier to find jobs like case managers with no experience, but just a degree. If your friend wants to pursue this field, I can't emphasize enough how important it would be for her to find an entry-level job in a group home or some place so she can get working experience to move onto something better once she does get a BA.

I went on to get my MSW which I obtained in 2004. Right now I work in a case management role for both Long Island and Queens. I make a decent salary but a lot of people who don't have a lot of experience and only a Bachelor's degree are having a much tougher time. Anything human-services related has become an "employer's market" from what I have seen, and a lot of jobs (especially in this area) don't pay a whole heck of a lot. I don't want to discourage your friend but I recently went on an interview in Commack doing basically what I am doing now and it only offered around $32K a year, salary non-negotiable. Having student loans to pay back, a mortgage and a family on Long Island.............that's pretty disgusting IMO. And this was for a MASTER'S degree level position.

Most other positions that pay decently (i.e. around $50K-$70K) you will need a Master's and often, a license in social work, and you may need to consider commuting to the city.

Re: sociology...

I have a BA in sociology and my first full time job out of college was a college admissions counselor and now I am in Human Resources.

Your friend can do social work, work for college administration, its such a general degree you can get a job anywhere.

Good Luck! Chat Icon

Re: sociology...

I was a Psych major/Sociology minor.

I got my master's in school counseling and am a guidance counselor (which I LOVE).

With either major, a masters ia huge plus in regards to working in a school and receiving a higher salary.

While you can work for ACS (CPS), foster homes, college admissions etc. without a masters, you have more opportunities with one.

Re: sociology...

I have a BA in Sociology.

I went on to get my MBA with a dual concentration in Accounting and Computer Information Systems.

IMO, I wouldn't pursue a BA in Sociology in this economy unless she is committed to going on to get her Master's degree right away. I graduated in 1999 and was able to get a few decent paying jobs before deciding to go for my MBA. I think, as Mzsocialworker was saying, it is a completely different world now.

Re: sociology...

When I got my BA in sociology in '98, I was only able to get REALLY low paying jobs (less than $10 an hour) as a caseworker working w/ teenagers. I went on to get my MSW and then was able to qualify for jobs paying up to around $40K (still not a lot) to start.

Unfortunately it's a field w/ a lot of jobs with meaning and you're able to help others----- but often u can barey pay your bills.

Just to piggyback on this...........I want to say that I have had a lot of people in my field reach out to me who got their BA and then went on right away to get a MSW. They are having lots of problems as well finding jobs because of the lack of work experience. Unfortunately in today's economy, "internship" experience doesn't qualify as the same thing as "working" experience, and you only get the internship experience with the MSW program. I don't want to be a Debbie Downer but even in human services, you need to "pay your dues" which requires working very low-paying jobs, often with crappy hours, in bad neighborhoods, etc. in the beginning.

I think in this part of the state, you really need to have a 2-income household to make ends meet. I know that's normal for a lot of fields, but social work/human services even moreso.

Re: sociology...

I have a BA in Sociology. Right after graduation, I went to grade school to get a Masters in Art of Teaching (Masters for non education BA holders), I am a teacher now. I originally went into undergrad wanting to be a social worker. I feel if you get a BA in Pysch or Sociology, you will end up needing to get an advanced degree.

While I enjoy what I do for the most part, there are many days where I wish I had a job in insurance or something like that. Even a supermarket or coffee house! Chat Icon Social work is filled with a ton of aggravation.
