weird post...what do i do with my sister?

she's wanted to be a teacher for as far back as we can remember. always loved spending her time helping out ccd teachers...
she graduated from hunter this year with early elem ed.

no luck even finding someone to look at her resume this summer.
she tried getting on a sub list, no luck.
pair that up with a boyfriend she is at a cross roads with...well now for the past month she is living with me.

she is waiting tables at my dh's place.

she was crazy nervous able applying down here since school had just started, she said she would not have prep time and her first year is going to be the most difficult.

well now i have been pressuring her to apply for any job that comes up with the schools down here...charlotte.

she is in such a funk. she hasn't gotten any call backs, but its only been a week.

she is really nervous of the new graduating class and now having double competition at the start of next school year.

what can she do? she feels like if she takes a job as an admin or something in meanwhile she will be giving up.

any suggestions? thank!s

I'm in Raleigh, so I am not totally sure what the situation is like in Charlotte. I can tell you that it's a really rough time to get a teaching job over here right now. I am going out on maternity soon and my principal had hundreds of applicants for a short leave replacement, most certified and many with some experience under their belts.

This is very different than how it was even just a couple of years ago- we had so much trouble finding qualified subs. Sorry to not have better news for you- my advice to your sister would be to NOT sit back and wait for something to open up. This is a time to apply for any and everything that is posted, hand drop off resumes in case the principal is around to chat, and try to make as many connections as she can.

She is right about the first year being the hardest, and of course it's ideal to start when school begins, but the reality right now is that there are teachers in the system being shifted around to fill those positions- her best bet is to get into something mid-year and just work extra hard....HTH!

i told her she should try and volunteer or something...just to get someone to know her name.

the schools that she student taught at already had their sub list and a wait list for the sub list.

When I wasn't getting any calls, I broadend my search. Maybe, just to have some type of experience, she can apply for other educational related jobs. For example, a TA or aide? They dont pay as well, but its good to have experience and she would doing something she loves rather than waiting tables.

thanks! she's been applying for ta as well. nothing. but i know a lot of them were laid off down here

I would just keep reminding her that it is a really difficult time in the teaching world right now. Like PP said, there are lots of applicants and not a lot of jobs. Hand delivering resumes is great advice too. I hope she finds something soon

Tell her to keep checking the websites. I know Union County has a few leave positions open right now. Definitely tell her to look into those--they are a great way to "get your feet wet" in a classroom that's already set up for you.
